How much coolant loss vs time driven is normal?
Title says it all (Not talking about hours, but months/years, Miles/hours ran).
I'm probably just being paranoid but, How often do you need to add coolant to a car with only evaporation being the loss? It seems every 4 months or so my coolant is a little low, not low enough to turn the light on, but lower than I set it at. No leaks, no smells in the engine bay, no white smoke. |
Basically very little...maybe 1 cup every 6 months....there is no reason in a sealed system for it to go anywhere
If you are loosing much more than that...check the weep hole on the water pump..that is a very common leak when it gets on in miles :) |
Zero loss is normal which is the # for my 07 at 5.5 years and 32, 000 miles.
Dannobre's # is upper normal amount which could happen by bad cap even or worst case internal seep. My 07 would smell of antifreeze when new, but it's full and I never added any. I guess some hose fittings hardened up to seal better. |
About 4oz every 4 months. Running a 70%water/30%coolant mix. All Coolant hoses are new. Temp rarely goes over 210*f, most of the time it's between 181-195*f. Just seems odd.

It could be a lot of things....it's within what I would call OK...and wouldn't worry too much at that level
You could try and pressure test it...it might let you see where it's leaking from....or use an UV die Likely a hose connection or the water pump :) |
its kind of normal. in addition to looking at the water pump, i would poke your head under the bumper and look at the radiator. my old car didn't leak, but it did show some signs of seepage

Aren't our water pumps changed when the engine is replaced by Mazda?
If so, this water pump only has about 60k on it. Engine was last replaced in 08 @ 47k miles, have 109k on the obo. I'll check out the water pump this weekend, she gotta go back to the shop today for more rear end work. |
