How many miles before replacing brake pads?

Just wondering how many miles on average folks here drive before having to replace brake pads . I have 47K on my 8, and I am replacing my first set of tires. But I was told by the dealer that my front brake pads need to be replaced. So, I was wondering if that was average.

your stock tires made it to 47,000 miles?! Mine lasted 19,000. :( (although, they were driven pretty hard)

It's always a good idea to have you brakes checked once a year but 50k sound about right for our cars.

If you're mechanically inclined you can pull a wheel off and check them yourself. Make sure you measure the thickness of the inside pad as well as the outside. That does sound about right for front pads, especially if it's an automatic.

It really depends on how often you use your brakes. More highway miles means less brake usage means longer brake life. More city means more braking means shorter brake life.

I swapped my pads for higher performance pads at 55K miles. They had about 30K miles on them and 90% of their pad life left. I had them replaced under warranty at 25K so I've never actually driven through a full set of pads.:)

Wow 47K on your stock tires, thats really good. That might be a record for the forum. Is that mostly highway miles? If so I'm surprised the brakes are worn out. I would inspect them inside and out too.

Yup, that's what I was thinking. If my tires lasted that long, my brakes should as well. I did a drive a lot on the highways and I didn't think I was braking excessively, although I did notice that 8s stop on a dime. I avoided a few accidents where I know if I was in another car, I couldn't have.

I only made it 19/20k miles on my stocks :(

my brake pads got changed somewhere between 40K-45K, alot of city driving though. My tires usually stay good for 17K-19K. My rear pads have 3mm left so theyre getting low and my car has 58K on it, I hope that helps in some way, lol.

Wow 47k on your first set of tires?! Just guessing, but your brakes should be fine. I only got about 20k out of my first set of tires. I just changed my brakes and rotors a few months ago at about 70k miles. Should have done it a lot earlier though. They were way past needing to be replaced. I'm at 83k now nearing the end of my 3rd set of tires.
