HOW many miles before 1st front bakes replaced

Wife took her 8 in for oil change and they said she has about 10% left on front brakes at 24000 on her 8 ????

TownDrunk 10-09-2006 05:11 PM

I've got 32K after 3y 3mo, and still have plenty left (I believe it was +25%)

ZoomZoomH 10-09-2006 05:12 PM

brake use is highly dependent on traffic condition car is used most in. does your wife drive in city traffic mostly?

Razz1 10-09-2006 08:36 PM

no but she washes windows!

Raptor2k 10-09-2006 08:45 PM

Mine were less than 10% at about 26000. I'm just hardcore.

therm8 10-09-2006 09:12 PM

67000 miles, still good. /shrug

dannobre 10-09-2006 09:35 PM

I have 45K miles on my car ...and I've been through 5 sets of fronts and 2 set of rears :D:

Mileage has little to do with it ;)

swoope 10-09-2006 09:38 PM

so she is a mail carrier or does track days... or both. problem solved.... :cwm27:

beers

What pads do you use on the track..I can solve that consumption issue if youre a pad swapper for track events.

Sounds like she just rides the brakes. Brakes are nearly unnecessary in day to day driving in this car. Just need 'em for stopping or emergencies. Or the occassional spirited cornering.

Downshift.

shaunv74 10-11-2006 04:46 PM

If she has an auto she'll burn through them faster. Also there is a TSB on the front pads where they are instructed to swap them out under warranty if requested by the owner. Check on the forum for the TSB thread and you should be able to get a new set for free!

I have a AT first year I had my car I did not do much driving. So my brakes lasted 2 years. Now I drive a lot on street and highway. I had my brake pads replaced June of last year. Now I need pads and rotors. Some times I drive hard like at night and some times I dont like in the day when its 100+ out.
For replacement of the oem braks I would look into www.rotora.com

dmp 10-11-2006 07:15 PM

My OEM brake Pads (on the right) at 25,000 miles, and I am a VERY spirited driver.. :)

Mine made it 44,000 before the front ones played out.

Lets see...2 set HPS, 2 sets HP+ 1set Blacks

2 sets HP+ on the rear.

Rx-Appreci-8 10-12-2006 12:16 PM

Dealer replaced front pads / and severely worn rotors under warrantee at 17K.

ULLLOSE 10-12-2006 12:44 PM

21k still on the first set.

Rhythmic 10-12-2006 02:12 PM

Whats the mileage limit for replacing pads under warranty?

I asked my dealer to replace pads per TSB, and they told me I needed new pads front and rear, and rotors turned front and back?? I think my rotors were actually warped when the dealer sanded and painted my rusty rotor hubs b/c they were great before I picked the car up after this service:(

I'm at 31k mi., and am a rather spirited driver.

Ophitoxaemia 10-15-2006 09:50 AM

replaced mine at about 24K. one day at laguna seca and i had to replace the front and rear rotors and pads. is your wife sneaking out the track without you?

james

Chris 10-19-2006 11:26 AM

I don't really have a comment, just thought I'd let this one sink in. :)

rotarygod 10-19-2006 01:45 PM

I know it isn't on an RX-8 but it doe show how different driving techniques can affect things. On my Honda, I downshift everywhere and use the brakes as little as I can. I am at 148,000 miles on the car with only 1 set of front brakes ever replaced and the original set of rears! They are getting low and need to be changed soon but it is possible to make brakes go pretty damn far.

TomAssBender 10-19-2006 02:00 PM

for those of you who dont use your brakes, don't your clutches go faster?

i am always hesitant to start engine braking cause id rather replace my pads than my clutch

rotarygod 10-19-2006 02:11 PM

Well I'm also at 148,000 miles on the original clutch and it has no signs of slipping. It is far harder on your clutch to accelerate than it is to use it to slow down. Hard launches such as in drag racing are hardest on it.
