How many miles for 1st oil change?

id say, maybe stick with the instructed interval which is 3K miles

or should i change oil at 1K, to reduce the risk of metal particles that would damage the rotary?

mikeb 02-04-2004 05:33 PM

1k seems a little crazy

I'm doing 3k changes

Maximus 02-04-2004 08:26 PM

what he means is FIRST oil change after 1000 miles and NOT regular oil changes at every 1000 miles.

I think the first oil change at 1000 is good. You can then stick with 3000 mile intervals.

rxeightr 02-04-2004 10:06 PM

I'm doing mine every 2,500 miles - so the 1st change was 2,500.

All I can say is the OWNER'S MANUAL does not say to change the oil after 1,000 initial miles of ownership...

murix 02-05-2004 02:13 AM

The owners manual says 5k for heavy use and 7k for light use (long trips).

Considering the amount of oil I have to constantly add and the fact I have a warranty, I am going with 5k. I would rather not keep paying to change out what is mostly fresh oil every 3k if I do not have to. I am sure most everyone else will disagree with me.

fredinlou 02-05-2004 10:23 AM

i agree with you hell the dealer will probably put the wrong oil in it anyway. or they may scratch it, flood it, drive the poop out of it etc the less times at the dealer the less chance for disaster imo 5000 for me... is there a time duration? as i dont put on a lot of miles with my wife having a company car for b.s driving grocery etc

Will Barger 02-05-2004 02:10 PM

I'm at 4K miles with original factory oil. However, I have added three (that's 3) quarts of oil during these 4K miles! In a sense, I guess I am continually "changing" my oil!

Something's wrong here...3 qts/oil in 4K miles and an avg. of 10.6603 mpg! I'm not overly impressed thus far!

zoom44 02-05-2004 02:51 PM

1st change was at 5k for me. and that's the interval i'm sticking to.

I did a search but couldn't find anything. For those of you who have gotten your oil changed at the dealer how much did it run?? I know there are other places that are probably cheaper but I really don't want to trust them with a new car. Come to think of it, I don't trust dealer service dept's that much either.... Maybe I'll just do it myself :)

i3man 02-05-2004 05:45 PM

I changed 2x at 1000 miles. Since the engine only drains about 1/2 of the entire oil in the engine when you pull the drain plug, I changed oil, drove the car a couple of miles to mix up the oil, then drained it again the same day.

kahnco 02-05-2004 08:24 PM

We have a couple isses at work here.
1. FIRST oil change miles
2. Interval oil change mile
3. How much drails when changing oil
4. What companies don't say

Break in is big time important. Let the oil (engine, trans, rear gear) do its job during the break in. Oil in my opinion 2,000 miles. Then change it! By doing this you effectivly let the debris help the engine break in. Then go with your interval (for me 1,500 miles). You leave a fair amount of dirty oil in the coolers and lines when changing so you have to look at dillution percentages. Ask yourself a question, if a auto co. said that you should change at 2,000 miles for your first how much faith would you have in the engine? This engine is spot on great. All metal things ware into each other and that happens most at first. Flush and move on! I am at 5600 and did the MT today. The drain plug has a magnet it looked like a daisy. I will drive on that new fluid till around 30,000. First soon and then smooth running!

1st oil change was at 1k mi. in Dec. Will do 3k mi. oil change intervals after that. Currently at 2k mi. after having the car since 10/22. No problems with low oil levels as of yet.

I changed the oil early because I didn't want the factory oil in the car when I was about to get an aftermarket exhaust and ECU upgrade. I would be running the car hard and dynoing the car quite a bit after that and again, as it was stated above, I didn't want the metal particles doing any damage to the internals of the engine.

To each their own but that was my theory. :)

RX8_GT 02-06-2004 10:13 AM

I'm going with 2500 mile oil changes - plan to alternate with every second oil change at dealer for the first year or two - other oil changes done by myself. Will permit me to have minor issues dealt with and will be more than the recommended 5K changes in the documents I got with the car.

For those of you who have gotten your oil changed at the dealer how much did it run??
My dealer charges $24.95, but since I elected not to take their buy-back offer, my every 5,000 mile changes are free for the 1st 50,000 miles.

In-between those I change my own oil & filter in 2,500 mile intervals, that way it gets fresh oil every 2,500 miles.

Pekoe 02-08-2004 10:45 PM

Just like to add my 2 cents here. 90% of my driving is highway, usually at 4000RPM i.e. 78MPH and I had to add two quarts of oil before my first 5K change. Something's rotten in Denmark... among the other inconsistencies of the Renesis specs, the engine is supposed to burn 1 quart per 10K miles! Not happy with my 8 folks and I am a repeat buyer (85gsl-se and 86 rx7). Should have kept the Acura CL-S - for all of it's design flaws and FWD :(

P.s. I never had to frequent a forum with the previous ride because things just worked!

DemonRX-8 02-08-2004 11:20 PM

But, but, but . . . forums are fun! I'm a member of a forum for just about all of my vehicles.

2 quarts in 5k miles sounds odd from what I've read also. Did you do a lot of your hwy driving during the break-in period?

I have just under 600 miles on mine with almost no hwy miles. Been varying the revs and am slowly starting to get it up to 5000 rpm, with occasional 6000-7000 rpm hits. I checked my oil today and it looks almost unused - no contaminants or metallic particals. I was going to do the first oil change this weekend at 500 miles which I pushed to 600. I'll proabably wait until 1000 miles at this point. Then it's to the dealer for every 7500 mile change (which are free - the only reason why I'm having the dealer do them) and a change every 3750 miles in between myself. I plan on running dino juice until I'm convinced there is a measureable benefit/no harm in running synthetic in the Renesis(I run Mobil 1 synthetic exclusively in my piston rigs).

msrecant 02-10-2004 08:59 PM

I do a lot of low mileage city driving so I am using Schedule 2 and changing oil at 4 months (waiting for 5K miles would be too long). Hence my first oil change was 3,000 miles. The 4 month schedule will probably result in a change every 3K miles which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I did not add any oil but I was near the low mark on the dipstick at the time of the change. I don't know for sure but I believe the dipstick range is 1.5 quarts. This would mean the engine is consuming about .5 quarts/1000 miles. I'll have a better handle on this next month (my 8 month, 6K oil change).

Maximus 02-10-2004 10:04 PM

Dumb question :(
How many quarts does it need for an oil change?

success07 02-11-2004 04:26 PM

Owners manual should tell you, Maximus.

Trx8 02-12-2004 06:52 PM

I asked the service manager if I should bring it in for an oil change after the break-in period -- he said no. I am on the 3750 mile plan.
