How long do the OEM Spark Plug Wires Last?
 

How long do the OEM Spark Plug Wires Last? Would I create more damage to the car if I just replace the spark plugs and the ignition coil? I am trying to rid myself of the CEL being on. I have a P0300 code and I believe the ignition coils are the culprit. I have the spark plug wires on order but they are not here yet. I just want that light to go off.

Tough call on how long. Too many variables.
Use your old wires until the new ones come in. You'll be fine.

what year is your car? Miles? Original owner? Are you using OEM spark plugs? How old are the coils / plugs?

I'm pretty sure those wires will last quite a while unless they're damaged. Would be a shame to swap out coils / plugs and then have to work in that same area again when your wires show up. Easier to just kill 2 birds with one stone but you won't cause any damage. (as long as they wires are in working condition with no physical damage / defect to them)
Just make sure you properly secure the wires to the plugs

^yes I believe the same thing!

In my '90 Miata I could tell when the plug wires needed replacement by the interference it would create with weak AM radio stations. Seriously. Replaced them 2 or three times based on that and each time the engine would be smoother and the radio noise would be gone. Always stuck with the OEM wires. Don't know if that trick will work on the RX-8.

normally I would consider looking at them at 50 or 80k miles.

As far as i'm concerned the stock leads are crap, i've always had a crackle on LW radio, not that i use it, i just noticed one day when i was board, i just put it down to poor surpression, then my next door neighbour complained about her telly going daft every time i had the car running on the drive, it remineded me of the old jap bikes with metal plug caps from the 70's-80's, so i invested in some magnacor kv85 leads and the prolem is gone:) , on closer inspection of the old leads, they'd started to crack up and go hard, you could see signs of water ingress, the rubber moulding on the plug caps is very poor, i can see why they get replaced so often.
I'd fit better leads just for reliability, the standard ones just are'nt upto the job, and are built down to a very cheap price.
