High pitched noise on acceleration
OK, I did at least five different searches before posting.
I'm getting a very high pitched noise on accelration (in all gears I believe). If I had to compare it to something I would probably say it sounds like air escaping a balloon. While the pitch is high, the volume is not. Any ideas? |
Where is it coming from?!?
|
Sorry. That's the hard part. It almost sounds as if it travels a short route underneath the car. Say from the front of the cabin to the back.
|
you have an aftermarket amp and sub setup?
|
No sir. Only "mods" so far are the green air filter, ground kit, and borla cat-back.
The noise has been around since before these were added, however. |
hmmm...there goes my theory...and if you say it was happening before you put the Grounding Kit on then I'm really at a loss...good luck with that one...

Does the sound change with engine speed, or vehicle speed? Sounds like a vacuum leak to me.
|
You could say that, it doesn't appear to exist at lower speeds, gets prevalent and then goes away until shifting into a higher gear at which point it would kick in again.

Thank you very much for the effort, unfortunately I don't think any of those are "my" sound.
Do they name these sounds after the discoverers like comets or viruses? |
Also the recall that changes the dynamic damper heat shield addresses a loose or fractured heat shield. This can cause a noise at certain RPM's.
If you havent had the recall work done yet......theres a good chance it could be the faulty heat shield. Recall |
i've got the exact same noise. open your hood, start the car and play with the throttle revving it fast and slow. you will notice that the intake whistles loudly when it sucks air in. my engine runs real sweet so i've not bothered to look into it any further.
|
It would be nice if you could compare to another car just to make sure it 'is' an abnormal noise. Not suggesting you are imagining anything, but it would be nice to rule out the possibility that this is a normal noise.
If it is a vacuum leak, then your only resort is to have someone rev the engine while you search for the source of the noise under the hood. All the intake air valves bar the auxiliary air work on vacuum, and another possibility could be the air line to the oil injectors (not vacuum). A job for the dealer me thinks... |
I have the same sound, I believe. My friends say it sounds like a turbo winding up. I think it might be the e-shaft and rotor gears making that sound. They have straight cut gears/meshing involved. In that case, the noise is normal. I tend to think it is one of the unique qualities of the rotary engine and I sorta like it.

That's not a bad comparison.
It's not that I can't live with the sound, just don't want to have a problem go unaddressed. I'm all for those quirky little things that make this car the unique. |
I know the noise your speakin' of, it's a slight whistling noise, right?
Mine does it too. It sounds like it could be gear whine.. it doesn't sound mechanically catastrophic so I'm not concerned. :) |
Bingo, that sounds like it.
|
I asked about this soungd ages ago on this forum but noone gave me a clear cut answer. I hardly notice it anymore though. It's usually most prevalent when im in sixth gear trying to accelerate on a slight uphill.

HOSE LEAK...
My Parents Jeep is in the SHOP... for the same thing... at higher speeds it seems like a whistling... noise... irritaing as heck... kind of like a ballon escaping air AS YOU MENTIONED.. -Vacumm Hose Leak... Possible from tranmission... my tranny shifted perfect... but at high speeds it made tht sound... dont worr you have about 10K miles to fix it... if you delay it for a long long time say 20K miles it will not shift... |
