Help Asap...car running horrible

a few weeks back i went to park my car and it started to idle really rough so i shut the car off and restarted it, it did the same thing and i spit a code misfire on 2, well since i started it to fast i flooded it out. it sat in the drive way for about a week and by then i picked a set of mazsport plug wires and went and got new plugs for it. put them on and deflooded it and it still wouldnt turn over right. got it towed to mazda they said recommend changing aftermart wires back to stock and my cat was clogged wanted to charge me 1900$. said screw that so i took it to a local exhaust shop close by had them take the cat off and wow it was clogged. had them run a straight pipe i know sucks but just for now till i get it fixed. went to pick it up today. started car rough idle but it started, had to keep pumping gas so it wouldnt stahl out. backed up while keep pumping smelt like gas horrible, went to take off it felt like a 4 cylinder car running on 1 cylinder wouldnt go anywhere high rpms loud noise, all of a sudden bam it would shoot off like its running normal, half way home bam back to feeling like its on one cylinder. every time i went to a stop it wanted to stahl out on me and i had to keep pumping the gas and when it did stahl it took awhile to turn over. called mazda im supposed to drop it back off tomorrow any suggestions? injectors ect? btw for some reason the heater didnt even work either??? haha

You probably need new ignition coils. The gas smell is because you have a midpipe. The heater problem is probably the solder connection on the knobs, its a well known problem.

Make sure the plug wire boot is secured to the spark plug.
Give them a twist while pushing inward and if you hear/feel a click, then you know one of them wasn't fully inserted.
Its also possible that a coil is going bad.

Have you had any work done recently (like an oil change)?

actually yeah i had my oil changed about a week before this started happening...they said they did a coil test they were all good

If its an '04 or an '05, you could have a bunch of oil in your intake causing a secondary seleniod valve to stick in your lower intake manifold which would kill the car when it would go to idle.

Here is the link to the thread when Jon helped me find + fix the problem. The stalling "could" be related to this.

1. Check what Jon said... all plug wires are installed tightly. Could be a loose connection.

2. Confirm the plugs are installed correctly - leading and trailing plugs are in the correct spots.

3. Check your air intake for any oil blow by. Clean MAF sensor just to eliminate that. Its an easy thing to do.

4. Pull all the codes again to see if there is anything else going on. Running lean, etc.

Beyond those things... yeah, I would say coils next, but if those were just tested and were fine, thats confusing. Are you positive the shop checked all the coils?

yeah thats what they told me. the check engine light is on at idle, idles fine then engine light starts to flash and the idle goes crazy i have to keep my foot on the gas and pump or itll idle so low itll stahl out. n yeah its flooded again forget about driving it to mazda today

mchenry121 01-21-2009 02:02 PM

okay i got it deflooded...i start it up perfect kinda high idle no missing ect. as soon as i touch gas and let go the idle falls flat on its face like i have to keep pumping the gas so it doesnt die and if i stop itll idle so low itll idle itself off. the car sounds completely different once i do it and engine light flashes. i took it down the road felt like 4 cylinder car running on 1 cylinder. i checked the wires took them off and put them back on and the plugs are good. i guess im going to check the coils tomorrow. any other suggestions? computer, fuel pump ect?

I"m also saying coils usuallly a flashing CEL is a misfire!

Did you read the thread about what happened in my car?

Check your air intake for oil.

The reason it will idle fine at start up is because the car will open addition air ports "multi side port" to get the car up to operating temp faster.

Once you touch the gas, it will drop the idle back to its default setting and only rely on two air ports for the idle control.

... all I'm saying is take the 5 minutes to make sure your intake isn't filled with oil.
Then check those coils. However, I feel, if it were coils, then your car wouldn't idle properly at all, regardless of when you start it up.
