Has anyone relocated their battery?

If so, where did you run the wiring? Any post-installation problems? And any pitures? Parts list? I figure I might as well fill up the almost useless trunk...

What would be gained by moving the battery on a car that has 50/50 weight distribution? Now if it was to make room for a 20B I would understand.

I think it isn't really 50-50 more like 52-48, and it is also out over the front wheel line, so moving it back into the trunk ahead of the axle line would be the best. Sounds like a good idea, probably a PITA though, unless you strip the car for racing.

I've been wondering about this for some time now. I figure relocating the battery to the trunk after I get FI will pretty much keep the weight distribution 50/50... plus, it would allow me to get a significantly bigger battery, and leave more room in the engine compartment.

Genom and I discussed this a while back for unrelated reasons, and it looks like it'd be pretty easy to run the cabling up conduit under the RH side door sill...

I weighted my 8 - full fuel, spare tire, but nothing else in the trunk. No driver or PAX in the vehicle. Using four independent scales at the same time showed the weight on each wheel to be within about 10 pounds of each other all the way around. About as perfect and 50/50 front to back side to side as you could ask for.

Seems to me moving the battery - away from the heat of the engine - would be worth any negatives created.

there is no point. so what about heat??

i am also very interested in moving the battery to the trunk...is there no one that has done this?

Check with the guys at Pettit Racing. They moved the battery to the trunk on the two cars that are being tested with superchargers. Tyler can help you 561-844-2258

Anyone who does this should take great pains to make sure the battery is absolutely held in place securely. Wouldn't want something with that much mass entering the passenger compartment in a crash. Same for the spare tire that some people insist on just laying in the trunk to avoid using the carrier.

how about :
in the trunk-
1 2 person tent
1 bag of tent poles and pegs
2 sleeping bags
2 sleeping pads
2 carry on size suit cases
1 picnic basket full of variuos pots pans and untensils etc
1 small backpack
2 gallons of water
a couple or 4 extra pairs of shoes
plus 2 quarts of oil and the tire inflation kit which are always there in the trunk.

1 cooler on a back seat, safely buckled in. and on the return trip a nice case of napa valley wine buckled in the other seat. plus me and my wife plus a couple of jackets, hat etc. not bad for a sports car on a week long,2000 mile journey through northern cali :D

and yes they were normal size (and fit in the"test the size of your carry-on" thing) carry-ons that have small wheels on the bottom and a telescoping handle. i should go home and put all of that stuff back in and take a pic :)

Not bad for a sports car -- lets see you try to get that in a s2k, 350Z, etc., etc.

not to mention the amount of the 0 gauge cable you would need, that alone would add about 20 more pounds to the car. More chance for a fire to break out too, alot of amps there.

Mazdax605 02-02-2005 05:03 PM

20 lbs.,come on,even if you ran 4ott cable it wouldn't add that kind of weight. All you need to run is one wire from the battery in the truck to the starter,or where ever it goes now,and the ground can be picked up somwhere in the truck area.I relocated the battery in my RX-7,and only used about 6 feet of cable from the battery in the storage bin to the starter, and about 1 foot from the negative post to the seatbelt bolt on the passenger side for the chassis ground.I doubt I added any weight that could really be measured, aside from maybe the Optima battery weighing a bit more than the stocker.Relocating batteries isn't really that big of a deal I don't think, heck even the Miata has the battery in the trunk.Like others have said,be smart about it,and make sure the battery is tied down good, and make sure it is a non-venting type battery like an Optima.

... and yet more evidence of the usefulness of the trunk
