Grinding noise?
 

Has anyone noticed a odd noise coming from the underside of theier car? I can hear a slight grinding noise with a whine type noise every 2 or 3 seconds. it is a constant thing and really havent noticed it unti a couple days ago. i made an appointment with the dealer to have it checked out tomorrow. it sounds like it coming from underneath around the center of the car. any ideas?

Mine makes gear noise when running in neutral. Press the clutch pedal and it goes away. Dealer says it's normal...just the gears in the tranny spinning. I agree, but do not think it is "normal". Why don't any of my other vehicles do it? I am concerned about the status of fluids in the drive-train.

I had the same concerns....and guess what 6th. gear will not engage anymore.
Goes in for service next week.

no this is a totally different noise then what i am used to hearing. it will only do it once the car is warmed up and will do it from when i start it till when i shut it off. it has happened 3 times now and when i had it at the dealer yesterday i couldnt get it to do it. the noise is louder than the normal tranny noise that you hear. it is also accompanied by a motor like whine every couple seconds and is very methodical in its occurance.

while we're on the topic, does anyone else find the synchros to be really loud if the revs are perfectly matched? i actually kinda like it, but not if it's hurting the car

Yes. Everything about the tranny is noisey. I've owned enough permormance cars to know that the 8 just sounds like its running w/o any lubrication...very different from anything I have ever owned or currenty own. I have a '71 International Scout II that isn't nearly as loud in the drive-train.

Sounds like a Ford to me. I used to have friends with an F-150 and an F-350. The sounds coming from the RX-8 sound just like their truck sounds when they shifted. I thought something was wrong with their trucks, but they said that was normal. (Actually, the Fords were even louder than the RX-8).

I think I know what you're talking about, with the exception of the grinding noise. I do get the occasional whine/whir sound while accellerating, but nothing that concerns me.

Its the throw out bearing...nothing is broken..it just makes that noise..

All the 8's do that, mine does that..Elara's does that..its no big deal.

I am now noticing a strange whirring sound that matches engine revs, sounds like something rubbing against thebelt but i could't see anything. Any one else have this?

Oh you mean the sound it makes when you're slowing down from 65mph to 30mph and selected 2nd gear or 3rd while holding down the clutch? Try doing it in Neutral and when the speed goes down to 30mph, shift but still holding the clutch. That sound goes away :D

I think that's normal. Anything above 3rd gear doesn't do that sound.

this noise is under acceleration and doesn't matter if I am in gear or not. I can have someone rev it in neutral and hear it, or while I am driving down the road. This noise just started and I have ~4500 miles. It sounds like it is coming from in front of the passenger side in the engine bay near the firewall.

I have noticed a whirring sound b4, it is only when i am downshifting though, and it happens even if i don't match revs. I think it might b the syncros but the other manual cars i have driven don't even have syncros that lound, and one was a saturn, which i believe is ford owned. Might b GM owned though.

sounds like intake area maybe...still investigating, definetly not transmission related. Any thoughts
