I hate to bump a thread from 2 years ago but I ran into the same thing a few weeks ago and was searching around for the cause. Has anyone figured out what this is from?

The bottom grooves of the intake were filled with what looked like petrolium jelly. None of it was discolored at all, so I very much doubt this is engine oil.

From my experience it is crankcase pressure pushing oil up into the intake and throttle body.
Most likely from the overfill. Its looks like grease cause the oil lines will be lined with old oil mixed with condensation or whatever, comes out jelly looking. I have seen entire engine bays covered in oil from not being able to breath properly.. i rev the shit out of my rx8 and only ever run no more than half up the dipstick with oil. This helps alot, along with thicker grade oil etc etc..

When I first got my RX8 (early 2005) I used to race with a quart over the full mark of 5W20 and never had a single drop of oil, grease, etc then or ever since, though I stopped overfilling later and started running heavier oil.

Clean it out and check it later. If it comes back the engine needs to be rebuilt. Or you can deny this and continue running it into the ground.

TheWyvern - do you fill oil using a oil fill spout or pour it in the oil filler neck. Not using a fill spout can allow oil to flow into the return lines

I just started driving the car actively (about every other day) again this last Friday and the last oil change was done ~150 miles ago before I owned it by my father, the previous owner of the car. Just got off of the phone with him, as I just drove it hard for the first time last night and I only just saw this issue. He says he didn't know the car only took 3.7 quarts and had put about 4.5 quarts plus a top off in last fill up. He doesn't use a spout.

hmm. invest in a long-necked funnel it is.

Alright guys, for anyone interested (and don't take this is a direct contradiction to what TeamRX8 said, he's still probably right if it's happening all the time) I was at the dealer today to have my recalls serviced and I mentioned to the service lady that my air filter was smoked because I got a ton of oil spewed into my intake. She immediately asked me if I over filled it last oil change. I told her what my dad told me and she knowingly smirked and told me that it's pretty much inevitable on the 04-05 models that she has seen. She said something to the effect of "we've seen three RX-8's in here this year for these recalls and all three have this intake problem". Essentially what I'm taking away from this is CHANGE YOUR OWN DAMN OIL AND DON'T OVERFILL IT. Maybe even invest in a catch can if you don't trust yourself.

back in 06 or so mazda addressed the issue for 04-05's with a TSB
they run the oil overflow lines to the maintenance nipples (same ones you use for sea foaming)and change out the oil filler neck/bottle(may have just been a check valve I don't recall) that's the same as the the 06 and s2 fix.
This was not a recall so not everyone had it done(I'm not sure if they added this for remans or not)
its basically and inline catch can(lower run) and helps prevent the milky oil(top run)

that being said my first 8 I did not have this done and had overfilled the oil and never had any on the filter, my current 04 as seen in the photo has this done and also doesn't get oil on the filter. your best bet is to install a catch can

like team said if you have excessive amounts of oil on the filter you have other issues

Tremendous amount of helpful information here. I can see from your diagram the lines running from the oil filler neck to the intake manifold on the left side. Just as clarification from what you've said, are you asserting that it is possible that over filling by over a full quart could cause oil to wind up in your intake or are you saying it's not likely?

Either way, I'm going to order a compression tester on July 1st and see what's going on concretely with the motor.

pre TSB it's possible, but unlikely. however I've seen strange things :lol:

When I do oil changes I get a gallon jug and a filter ~20$. I don't use a funnel and check the jug till it says about 1 qt remaining( I technically overfilled). Don't forget that when we do a normal oil change we don't get all of the oil out of the system we do about 3.7-4 qrts but there is about 7 in the system (coolers and lines).
On the dip stick there should be two lines/circles/notches(on S1) the goal is to keep it close to the full line and never below the low line. this only applies if your car is stock, catch cans and sohn adapters will change a few variables but the intake part remains the same

ps you should be premixing :lol:
