Sitting in traffic on hot days are one of the two situations when I see my oil temps get above 200 degrees. The lack of airflow through the coolers as well as the hot pavement cooking the oil pan pretty much makes this a cooling issue that has little in the way of fixes.

The only time I've had any serious problems was sitting on the Hoover Dam in traffic for over an hour. It was 115 there and I actually had to roll the windows down and turn on the heat to bring my temps under control. Had my cooling system been able to handle it the oil temps would have been no issue.

Well, cooling is my next area to tackle. I wanna get a couple of track days in 100 degree weather to see where I'm at first though. Now I just have to find a place to mount the oil temp gauge.

I think it means the reference is the minimum.

100 PSi is a bit strange, because the bypass valve opens much earlier.

I will do some high rev runs today and get some specific numbers.

The highest pressure on my gauge is about 73 PSI, even at 9krpm.

oh wow, mine has gotten at least to mid 90's and I think 100 PSI but i will get specific data in a minute when I leave here.

Where are you pulling the pressure from? Are you using an adapter plate on the oil filter?

Another thing to check might be the grounds on your senders. If you happen to use prosport gauges they tend to have issues with resistance in the sender wires that shouldn't be there. I and a couple other local 8 owners had to run a secondary ground wire to ensure we got accurate readings.

I have the premium gauges so the ground is in the sender itself. I am pulling pressure from the oil filter, but I must have been smoking crack the first time I revved it up because now at red line its only right at 80PSI, highest was like 84PSI at like 8300RPM.

Here is what i saw on the way to have lunch at my daughters school.

RPM:8262 Water Temp:195 Intake Temp: 109 Oil Press: 83PSI

Did some more runs and they were right at about 80PSI at red line.

now that is in line with what we are seeing with 10/40 and 20/50 weights.

You would reach the bypass valve's opening pressure - so the max 73-80 PSi - even with xxw-5 or xxw-10 oils, maybe even with water, at redline. The viscosity only settles where you get the max pressure in the rpm range. Lower or higher rpms.

I'm running the premium gauges as well. The ground that is used by the senders with the batch that myself and another rx8 owner got ended up being seriously off from other sensors (as much as 20+ degrees negative)

We wired in another ground wire after measuring the resistance and it solved the problem.

Do you have a pic of your solution? Wouldn't hurt for me to do this.

I know this is an old thread to bump , but I have been reading all over the site on engine oil and I think any one who thinks they know ay thing about engine oil should go back and read the post by elysium19. I read it today and now I view oil differently and any way it is most informative and a beautiful write up. I understand thicker isn't better and why. Any with questions on oil please read this , it is worth the time.
