glowing cat

so i just reinstalled my cat yesterday and today after some aggressive driving i got out and smelled something weird and took a looksy and my cat was glowing red....is it normal for it to glow or is it gonna die soon? no cel btw

Typically glowing means its constipated. You should notice an increase in your engine volume and a loss of power soon if your cat is clogged.

Mine crapped out at 59K

clogged.

whats funny is that i went catless for like 15,000 miles and as soon as i put it on its clogged...weird

04RX8man 01-03-2009 01:07 PM

Y did u put it back on(yeah off topic j/w)

oh and it's clogged time to go to the dealership if still under warranty and have it replaced!

chancejat 01-03-2009 01:15 PM

so i could get the most recent flash.....my cd player fixed...and my ebrake handle replaced ....and my 4th gear synchro fixed....and now i guess my cat.....ive been holdiing out on going to the dealer bc of the midpipe didnt want them to find out and void my engine warranty so i decided to put it on and go....but there closed today lol....

This is happening to me too. I just got a new cat put in from repairs 2 months ago (I killed my mazsport midpipe by hitting a grate), and it glows slightly red every time I drive over 15-20 minutes. The sound of the exhaust also slightly but noticeably changes to a more boomy note during a drive as the cat goes from cold to hot. From what I can tell the power feels normal, but I think the cat won't last too long if it keeps going like this. I'm waiting for Racing Beat's resonated midpipe to come out so I can change it in as soon as possible.

I have the Racing Beat street flash, this shouldn't affect the exhaust temps too much right? I'm usually averaging 4K rpms on the freeway.

Yes.

ShellDude 01-07-2009 12:50 PM

based on what? wouldn't they have to prove that the midpipe somehow caused whatever problem it is your trying to get covered?

It'd be more of a regulatory issue than a warranty one imho. They may require you to buy a completely new cat, but I feel sorry for the guy that shows up at a dealership with a test pipe regardless.

in a word.... Yes.

Because, if you just remove the cat (O2 sensor), the engine computer will recognize this, and attempt to change all sorts of maps to try to resolve the perceived problem. It is possible that the engine computer will actually cause the engine to run dangerously lean (or rich), either causing engine damage or causing overheating. If something becomes damaged after running the engine in this condition, then do not expect Mazda to warranty the failure.

I would not consider removing the Cat without tuning the engine (add-on EMS, or AccessPort) to by-pass the stock maps. (a change that will also not be warranteed in the event of failure).

The warranty is pretty simple. Keep your car as delivered - all warranties are intact. Why would you expect any company to warranty anything if it is modified beyond that was delivered?

Just my 2cents. I know others will disagree. :)

chancejat 01-07-2009 03:33 PM

they wont chage it bc its not throwing a code....

04RX8man 01-07-2009 03:37 PM

so ur saying i need to buy a midpipe and keep my stock midpipe with cat just incase i would ever have any problems to put back on and take in? haha

ShellDude 01-07-2009 04:05 PM

I speak from a purely hypothetical perspective.

Brettus 01-07-2009 04:09 PM

take it off and gut that sucka - your car will thank you for it . There is even a diy around here somewhere ...

04RX8man 01-07-2009 04:22 PM

that works too unless emissions need passed also mazda may know it's gutted under warranaty just take it in!
