Gen II Engine on Gen I chassis

Would it be possible to swap in a GenII engine on a 04-08 chassis? If the possibility existed of purchasing a wrecked 09 would this be possible? Doing this for reliability purposes only not major horsepower.

It would be more then just the engine. It would be the electronics and much more. Parts alone would probably be twice as much as series 1. Then there is all the extra labor....just pre-mix like most of us.

too much trouble --computer, harness, etc etc would all have to be changed.

Its do-able. but like the others said, its more than just the engine, you have to swap pretty much everything on the drivetrain

if its like that, you might as well go 20b with Motec

Someone will probably do it eventually. they used to say the same thing about STI motors in Impreza RS's.

Reason why I'm getting a complete chassis so as to move the hole wiring and ECU. I'm also not looking for big horsepower so no 20b for me.

YES.

sort out all wiring harness, ECU/PCM, and the vital electronics that it communicates with. and it really is simply just that...'09 internals on an older body.

be careful around the transmission casing. changes in regards to PPF has been made.

other than that, i don't see how this is not going to be the norm to come 20+ yrs from now following in the steps of series4/series5 rx-7's. only with few more extra tidbits to transfer over being on a CAN driven system.

other engine's using fly-by-wire systems like the S2000 motors have been transferred over to oddball donating shells like miata's and trueno's.
without the need to fabricate, this donor transfer would be one of the more simpler, if not more straight forward ones.

it'll be in no time when we look inside a series I seeing series II gauge clusters being the dead giveaway.

all there is to do now is wait for the series II to be in the yards.

but i reckon series II clusters to look right at home on my dash...
give it time!

I agree.

This is what you have to change or make sure it is On the Engine..

Engine, make sure it is complete..with both EMOP (Electric Metering Oil Pumps) , they sit under black plastic inlet Pipe.

You MUST also Change the Following.
PCM/ECU Assembly.
Front Engine Wiring Harness with Main Fuse Block.
Transmission Wiring Harness
Dashboard Wiring Harnesses.
Instrument Cluster (Speedo and Tacho)

You may have issues connecting Oil Cooler Hoses as Connections/Lines have changed (as have the coolers).

Also newly added Control Units...Air Pump, EMOP Driver....check out the link..

Suggest you check this link out, it tells you what has changed mechanically and these parts are NOT Interchangeable with S1.

If you think it is simple...go for it, but you basically have to completely strip the engine bay and dashboard apart on 2 cars...

Not a Simple exercise at all..

Anything is possible, just depends on how much work you want to put in it.

However, I could think of about 10,000 better ways to spend that time and energy on this car, especially when you will be seeing bascially 0 practical gain from this.

People do this sometimes with the second gen rx7, but there was a power difference between the two motors. The latter N/A engine even had a higher redline. No such gain on the rx8.
