gas hog????

i just recently bought an rx8 and i was wondering if anyone else knows about the mileage they are getting?? i know it says 18-26 for the automatic. seems like im getting less then that. does the gas matter on the mileage from the high test to regular. can anyone shed soem light thanks guys

Do a search on gas mileage and you'll find endless topics. Everyone seems to get different mileage and some actually get better gas mileage with lower octane gas.

Welcome to the gasaholics anonymous club. There's a lot of reading to do if you want to search the site, but to summarize- don't worry too much... people on this site get anywhere from 12-24mpg- there's just so many variables. I'm personally averaging 16.x over the past 10 months/10k miles with mostly lead foot city driving. :)

310Guy 10-20-2004 11:48 AM

13.37 mpg last tank for me.

90% city driving.

Yes, do a search; you'll get hundreds of threads on this.

Bottom line: everyone is getting different mpg...

Lufa 10-20-2004 12:01 PM

in a word... yes.

spork 10-20-2004 12:52 PM

Here's a summary.

Most seem to get around 15/22.

Some people get awesome mileage even pushing the car (20/26)

some people get horrible mileage even with granny shifting (12/18)

Some people get better mileage with higher octane/Shell V-Power gas.

Some get better mileage with 87 octane gas.

Some people theorize that short trips give you bad mileage since the engine doesn't have time to warm up.

Some people say cruising at 3.25K-3.75K rpm improves gas mileage.

Some people say something like the tornado fuel saver works but most people say it's a scam.

For me... I get about 15-16 mpg with mostly city driving (not very aggressive driving though). I got up to 17 and 18 when I started driving more freeway.

the thing is- as will be said I'm sure in the other gas threads eventually if it hasn't been said already (how's that for talking in a circle) is that the ECU varies so greatly from car to car. unless i"m on the highway for the whole tank- I can't seem to break 20mpg. if on the hwy for the tank- no matter how much I beat on it with the AC on- I get at least 24mpg

my worst for a full tank- 11mpg:)

frig 10-20-2004 03:36 PM

I was getting about 15 mpg. Just one tank of Shell V-power and I'm up to 21.5. Waiting for a few more tanks to see if gets better.

Holy $**@ I wish V-Power worked like magic juice for me. I seem to get 15MPG regardless of how I drive.

XDEEDUBBX 10-20-2004 05:43 PM

im getting about 15-18 all freeway driving though...but about 80% of the time i keep my foot punched on the pedal..

mrkinn 10-20-2004 05:54 PM

well i was just wondering... i went a little over 300 miles with a tank but it was most highway driving cruise set. windows down and the tunes up... i guess i just have to get use to it and stop worring about it.. do people feel that gas is different.. do u guys think that where u get gas makes a diff. i used to. i used to only use bp im from ohio alot of bp stations up there then i switched to mobil doen here.. we do have shell stations here maybe i should try it. what are u thoughts on gas??

310Guy 10-20-2004 09:35 PM

over 300 ?!

The most I've ever gone is 240 which netted me 18 mpg - and that was ALL highway driving. :(

Reaper Man 10-21-2004 12:48 PM

yup, it's all about what the ecu or pcm says to use for A/F

nite crawler 10-21-2004 05:59 PM

Dude. If you got over 300, then please do not ever post anything about poor mileage. That is awesome. Not as good as LOTS of cars out there, but compared to us.... you got it made. I cannot make it over 240. Highway eats my gas up just as much as city. Sometimes I think more.

FUEL MANAGEMENT OWNS ME

bryrx804 10-21-2004 06:19 PM

haha.. well im also one that gets over 300 a tank too.. =) never less then 270 with city.. I see every tank 280-310.

310 was all highway.. cruise control for 310 miles (non-stop) :)

G8rboy 10-21-2004 06:29 PM

I bet I could get your RX8 to see a lot less than 270 :D

RotaryNoob 10-21-2004 06:30 PM

I'd like to see the dyno's of the cars that get best and worst gas mileage to see if there is a difference in power.

WTF? I just don't get it. I'm not even close to that. :( :( :(

bryrx804 10-22-2004 02:18 PM

Well I have almost 13,000 miles on it (5months old). the 310 was crusing at 68mph till the gas light came on pulled in and 310 was the read...

Just since monday I drove over 600 miles this week.

Love the car.. good thing I bought it.. =)

2ROTORZ 10-22-2004 08:03 PM

Damn, I get no better than 13 and it is all Highway driving on high octane (93). I even tried to run the car at 3000 - 3500 rpms for a tank of gas, I still got under 250 miles to a full tank of gas. I have the "M" flash. Could there be something wrong with my car? I seem to be getting the worst mileage here.

Jazper 10-23-2004 09:30 PM

Something smells fishy!

I have checked every tank on my 2005 and I almost always get 20.5 mpg. And this is nowhere near 300 miles per tank... you are must be draining the tank dry to get that or you are getting exceptionally good mileage.

bryrx804 10-23-2004 10:28 PM

well I always fill up when the gas light comes on.. and always 13.2-13.6 gal

2ROTORZ 10-24-2004 07:10 PM

Just out of curiousity, how is everybody gaugeing your mileage? Just dividing the number of miles to empty by the tank size, or if there some way on the vehicle that I can check this that I am not aware of. Just that the figures posted tend to seem so exact (ie: 13.3 vs 13.6)..

bryrx804 10-24-2004 10:44 PM

Sure I just dont post the exact amount each time I do log it thou sicne I get paid millage and is a tax write off. I say 13.3 but truly was 13.325 and 13.623.. the number of gallons till the pump turns off and round to the nearest 5 or 10 cent ..to make my online banking happy.. ;)
