Flywheel Install Instructions????
 

looking for detailed instructions on install for new flywheel with pirctures. saw one on a thread here but not too detailed.
anyone know?

Broke Apex Seal posted some pretty decent instructions. I intended to do the same but have yet to make it a top priority. I will make this suggestion; to do a flywheel swap is not easy and if you need detailed instructions you may wish to reconsider it. I am not trying to discourage you, at all, but there are some snags along the way. If you don't know the proper angles, which plugs are for what, proper tool usage, and so forth, you could make matters worse. On the other hand, I discovered that the swap was very closely related to all the other cars I have worked on in my 20 years of messing around. I was lucky in that I didn't need a manual. If you decide to go ahead with it I would be happy to give you some things to watch out for if you decide to do it in your driveway.

the guy that is helping on the job is a real gearhead and has done lots of similar work...although not on mazdas...
i am hoping that his competence pulls through...he has hoists, tools and experience.

Go Pistons(I mean basketball)!! Since you have a hoist and a helper the job should go easy. There are a few things to note.

1) Remove the shifter boot by gently tugging on the silver ring and it comes off easy.
2) There are two wires that plug into the driver's side of the trans that look similar. They are for the ECU to sense which gear you are in. Label them upon disconnection. The others are for the reverse lights.
3) The ppf comes off real easy as long as you maintain the pinion angle of the differential.
4) The flywheel nut is VERY tight.
5) Be careful of the intake manifold when lowering the trans. It could become damaged on the firewall otherwise.
6) If you keep the driveshaft installed in the trans as you lower it, there will be no fluid loss.
7) If you install a new clutch ass'y the friction zone will be at/near the floor and adjustment of the clutch will be necessary.

im planning to get mine installed next month, my questions regarding this modification is i have two options, taking it to the dealer and get it installed thereby retaining warranty, or have it installed by a local rotary guru which would cost less.
I'm most likely going with the latter but just how risky it is to have the flywheel modified?

i had my friend, a local motorhead (american metal) install mine.
he said it was a bigger job than expected but completed the job without error or incident.
i incidentally love the upgrade and feel it was worth the money.

Great news, Rudy. I am glad you like the results. BTW, I don't believe that doing a mod yourself necessarily voids the warranty. If you know what you are doing, and do it properly, what argument could Mazda make as to voidance issues? Given the stories read around here you're almost better off doing it yourself as opposed to taking it to the dealer. If it ended up in court, I would have an ASE mechanic look at my work and describe how I did the mod improperly that resulted in the problem. This wouldn't happen, though.

i have a good relationship with the tech at local mazda dealer.

i would hope he would stay tight lipped if needed.
