Is this exhaust worth getting?

Was thinking of getting a new exhaust backbox. I had a look on Ebay and saw these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MAZDA-RX8-...item483dbfc90a

This price is quite low compared to others but he has sold quite alot. Is it worth getting one like this or paying the extra?

Rotary-RX8 05-03-2012 09:29 AM

you get what you pay for

leetrx8 05-03-2012 09:41 AM

You're right for most of the time but why is it bad? Would it last only half the amount of time? Or not make as much noise? Or what?

SayNoToPistons 05-03-2012 10:14 AM

Fitment, weld/bend quality, quality of the steel (listed T-304 may be questionable), small diameter piping (2.5"), and probably sounds like ass.

EricB 05-03-2012 10:39 AM

if you want cheap just do straight pipe bosozoku style

nycgps 05-03-2012 11:20 AM

everybody likes to save money ...

BUT

there is a limit, and when it comes to exhaust, I would NEVER go cheap, that's just me tho.

EricB 05-03-2012 12:28 PM

you gotta pay to play, if not then your car will look like crap.

the rr exhaust is currently the cheapest and sounds good (to me) if you are okay paying 350 for a knock off instead of 500+ for the hks (which is sounds like you are) then you should do that.

Why not just get a race root exhaust if you want cheap, it's like $300

leetrx8 05-03-2012 05:05 PM

Where can I get a racing roots?

An expensive real exhaust will probably make less noise than a cheap one. You know... there are db limits on most tracks.

Single Exit Exhaust - How dare you suggest that !!! ;)

leetrx8 05-03-2012 05:21 PM

What exhaust would you recommend?? I'll pay the extra, you guys have convinced me that's the way to go.

bse50 05-03-2012 05:24 PM

Re Amemiya's super dolphin is nice.
Mazdaspeed dual muffler etc.

EricB 05-03-2012 06:07 PM

r magic, the ones with the titanium rotor shaped tips. HOTT

i prefer single exits though.

Wind Dance 05-03-2012 09:54 PM

Cheapest dual that is decent is turboxs, but be warned it was reported that it melts shrouds

9krpmrx8 05-03-2012 10:23 PM

I was trying not to respond but......

More expensive doesn't always mean better guys. The Mazdaspeed catback is well known for rusting (even in south Texas where rust is never an issue) at the welds and cracking. I have personally installed (some more than once) the Borla, Exoticspeed, turbo XS, HKS Hi-power and twin tip, Greddy SP, racing beat revi (both series 1 and series 2), Agency power, and Mazdaspeed dual canister and I can tell you that there was essentially no difference in weight (except Hi-Power) or fit or finish between any of them and actually the Turbo XS is one of the easier ones to install and mine is three or so years old and looks and performs great. That said, I miss my HKS dearly because I loved the sound and the weight difference.

I have owned both the HKS Hipower and the Turbo XS and my HKS melted the shrouds and my TurboXS has not and actually I know a couple of people with it and melting shrouds is not an issue so I'm not sure where you got that info.

The only two exhaust i have personal experience with that sort of looks cheap to me and I don't like the sound of is the Agency power. the tips are thin and cheap looking. One local does have the Ebay special and the welds look fine and the fit is fine, the only thing i would change is the tips and that is simple to do and cheap even for bran name tips.

Thanks for the advice.

Alot of people have told me the Toyosport catback is good (£189 or $360ish). Several owners are telling me they have owned this for ages and have no problems. I've checked out the videos on Youtube and I love the sound of this too.

bse50 05-04-2012 07:26 AM

yes, it's good crap.

JCrane82 05-04-2012 07:35 AM

9k is right with his comment above. I personally didn't want to spend over $600 on an exhaust that will give zero power improvement (maybe 5 hp at 9000 rpm, yet -5 hp at 4000 rpm). It is well known that cat back systems are not for power on our cars, especially if you are running stock header and cat. Bigger diameter piping is not always better either. Only reason you would need/want 2.5" piping or larger is if you are FI. Larger piping will slow down exhaust flow and give a different turning frequency (high rpm vs. mid range).

Here is a good thread to explain this:

https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...hlight=exhaust

I will say that my $250 Ebay exhaust looked like crap after an Iowa winter, and I just sanded and painted it flat black about 2 weeks ago. These Ebay exhausts will provide the same power gains as others (possibly better by not robbing mid range power), but the metal quality is obviously in question. If you like black exhausts, then buy it and paint it with some header paint.

Ometta 05-04-2012 07:50 AM

I have a Borla exhaust that I paid 700 for. I didn't want a crazy loud or shitty sound and so far the Borla has done me right. It's probably one of the most quiet aftermarket exhausts out their next the the Racing Beat exhuast. It's much louder than stock exhuast but loud when you want it to be. If it's too quiet for you then just add a midpipe.

^^^^What brand is that? I haven't seen that one before.

nycgps 05-04-2012 08:55 AM

The US version of Mazdaspeed Exhaust is ... based on (or is it made by?) CorkSports ? and the rust problem only applies to that one

the Single Canister never had that issue, that one is made in Japan. and that's what I'm planning to get

yea I know it does not make enough noise but hey, I LIKED IT that way, as long as it's louder than stock for a bit, I'm happy.

alnielsen 05-04-2012 09:11 AM

I have had the Corksport exhaust on my car for 7 yrs. It's not as pretty as when I first got it, but it's holding up well.

nycgps 05-04-2012 09:38 AM

well, both have similar design, so they both probably came from the same factory somewhere

Not saying it will go bad for sure, but lot of the Mazdaspeed-US catback did go bad, the weld on it sucks. at least if u compare to the single canister one.
