EXHAUST help please

Hi, my CEL light came on few weeks back, just got a call from mazda and they say it is because the cat has gone. Would you reccomend changing just the cat (cheapest option) or the cat back?, as there will be bits blowing around in the rest of the exhaust from the old cat, and i am not sure if that will damage anything in anyways?

Cheers

if your car is still under warranty, take it to the dealer and have them change the converter.

gruntly2006 01-29-2009 09:04 AM

unfortunatly the warranty has ran out it is 2004 model.

Razz1 01-29-2009 10:21 AM

No NO NO

Warrenty for emmissions are good for 80,ooo miles

04RX8man 01-29-2009 12:26 PM

^yes....80k miles or 8 yrs I believe no maybe it's 6yrs can't remember but either way if ur not to 80k it's covered!

gruntly2006 01-29-2009 12:36 PM

Im in the uk, does the warranty still apply??not sure if its same as it is in US, car only has 40k on...
cheers guys

Jedi54 01-29-2009 12:40 PM

US mandates 80,000 on emissions items, in the UK it might be different.

Replacing with a catback will not help because it would not replace the catalytic. OEM cats are expensive, maybe get the RP Supercat? (although, not sure what it would cost to ship to you)

gruntly2006 01-29-2009 12:43 PM

No sorry, i was going to replace either just Cat, or the cat + cat back not sure weather its worth getting the lot done??

Razz1 01-29-2009 12:43 PM

Rp Super cat is good and has alot of users for feedback.

Jedi54 01-29-2009 12:45 PM

how much is a cat in UK? Can you find any used ones from people that have put midpipe or turbos on?
If you cannot, try getting that RP Supercat, I've had it for a year and it works very well.
If you feel like changing the exhaust note of your car, I recommend a catback. Not much hp difference but the look / sound is worth it to me.

Razz1 01-29-2009 12:53 PM

the RP cat is good enough.

Save your money. you don't need a new muffler.

gruntly2006 01-29-2009 01:05 PM

Cheapest cat i have found is £280 on ebay, and cat back is £260. just a little worried that if i replace just the cat all the loose bits from my old cat will blast and damage the exhaust??

Jedi54 01-29-2009 01:15 PM

if the cat is broken up into pieces, they'll fall out when you take the cat out. No need to replace the catback just for that.

The RP Supercat is $395 US Dollars, how much is that after conversion?

gruntly2006 01-29-2009 01:18 PM

it is £277 so cheaper than other one...

Jedi54 01-29-2009 01:20 PM

send them an email to see what it would cost to ship.

Razz1 01-29-2009 01:36 PM

Sometimes you can find a used RP super cat in the for sale section.

Jedi54 01-29-2009 01:42 PM

yes, but sometimes they're the earlier models that dont have the right mounting points. (plus, the later models had a heat shield put on)

04RX8man 01-30-2009 07:18 PM

I also say supercat!

gruntly2006 02-01-2009 03:01 PM

would i have to replace the mid pipe as well??
cheers

DeViLbOi 02-01-2009 03:07 PM

You would normally replace a cat with a midpipe. Did you install a midpipe on your car? If you did it will throw a CEL for a failed cat and Mazda will want to replace it.

StealthTL 02-01-2009 03:13 PM

The cat IS the mid-pipe. The header connects to the (shin-bone!) cat which has a resonator behind, then joins to the 'cat-back'. An aftermarket midpipe replaces the cat and resonator.

A 'dead' cat is usually stucturally sound, just dead catalytically and no longer working. They don't usually break into chunks.

Does the MoT do emissions testing? Do you 'need' the cat? An empty cat-shell will give a tiny boost to performance, mileage and sound great.....

gruntly2006 02-01-2009 03:24 PM

mazda told me i need to replace the cat,it is completely stock at the moment. so i was looking at the RP ‘Supercat’ Mid Pipe, would i need to order anything else?? will it pass the MOT for emisions also?

DeViLbOi 02-01-2009 03:32 PM

That is all you would need. As for emissions...it is supposed to pass them according to them. Might want to check with them and see what happens if you fail emissions.

gruntly2006 02-02-2009 12:29 PM

Hey, does anyone know where i can get the supercat in the uk, was going to order one from rotary parts, but emailed them and they have yet to get back to me, and i dont have a clue how much the shipping will be.

cheers

i gotta break it to you gruntly2006, my stock CAT went last year, but instead of buying a mazda one, i've got a TVR Race spec CAT, and a full custom stainless system on my 231bhp model, but mine fails the emission tests miserably, but it all depends on who you know and where you go whether it'll 'pass'. You gotta remember rx8's are 'high emissions' car to start with. I've had mine on for about 6 months now and its great, backfires like hell (like flames an shit!) when i give the throttle a poke, sounds awesome too, and if you do buy a custom exhaust/CAT or De-CAT it altogether the engine management light may come on warning of excessive emissions, but just buy a ECU scanner off ebay to solve that prob, My advice would be to find a local performance specialist and let them take care of your exhaust/CAT, my place is called Urban Racing in St Helens (Merseyside, UK) the finished job looks great, great after sales service too, hope this is of some help :-)

hi gruntly

my CAT went at 62000 odd miles, 16 months ago. happened a few weeks after i bought the car so used car dealership replaced it under good will as mazda charge £1100 for an rx8 CAT.
my engine light came on driving home, i had just got it MOT'D and it wasn't crackling as normal as i have a motoria stainless steel cat back exhaust which normally sounds great.

recently my coils went and i got them, plugs and leads replaced, car drove like new for a few days, but i noticed some hesitation slightly at 4-5000 rpm a few days after. as i red line its like the CAT feels a bit stuffed, then the power comes on at about 6500rpm to 7000rpm and above as normal.

not getting any dash lights, my scan gauge II says no recorded codes, dunno what it could be. i did have to get the car tow started as the mechanic doesn't really know rotaries but could change the plugs, coils and leads ok, may have got flooded and this is not good for a CAT either. My CAT has only done about 10000 miles so, if they go that quick then they are shite no harm to mazda and yes they should be covering them like the USA.

I emailed honest john motors about if there is a warranty like the US's 80,000 mile warranty, but there isn't any as its part of the exhaust and most warranties on cars don't cover them.
I have signed up to warranties direct who sound very good and for a bit more will cover the CAT. I like the sound of this super CAT and would see about getting one if someone in the UK can verify it will pass the MOT etc. this part is too expensive to keep replacing and mazda should have a CAT that can cope with the high emissions/heat etc of the rotary. alot of people don't have bags of money to pur into a car, I for one am very disappointed with this and they should be covering their CATs with a suitable mileage warranty, when its bought new etc.

Look about a breakers yard to see if you can find one as the US CATS may do as their emissions laws would sound like they are quite strict and so would get you through the MOT.

let me know how you get on.
