Engine Won't Start

Today i went to go somewhere, i started the car, put it in reverse and started backing out of my driveway when all of a sudden the car just shut off.

I put it in park and tried starting it again but it wouldn't turn over, just kept on cranking.

its a 2006 RX8.

Any suggestions????

Thanks

Sounds like it's flooded if it shut down cold. There is a deflood DIY you can look up on this forum. While you're at it check out your spark plugs to see if they are fouled or worn as the reason for the unexpected stall.

mileage of the car?
Maintenance history?
Mods?

themodcity 12-10-2010 06:56 PM

20,000 miles, never changed coils or plugs...

Not flooded, l let it sit all day and just tried it again and still just cranks and wont start.

No mods, and its in warm weather.

LOL... I almost thought it was something worse

Gee OP, don't blame your son...blame yourself..lol :)

The number 1 basic component of an internal combustion engine is for someone to add Gas.

Somewhat of an embarrassment even posting this here and then blaming someone else.!!

Be a man nextime...;)

It's my sons car, not mine, he is the one who left it on empty.....

FWIW the guage will go about 1/8 of a deviation below the E before you run out .
If it is dead on the E it still has E nough and is probably flooded.
If so use the deflood proceedure .

Mazurfer 12-11-2010 12:16 PM

^....if we could only eek out another 1/8 out of your avatar, life would be good!

Brettus 12-11-2010 12:19 PM

/\ it's looking at the avatar that gives you the extra 1/8 ......

OK, i put gas in it and it still won't start, any more suggestions?

Tiler02 12-12-2010 10:30 PM

I had a fuel pump go out one time from trying to start with no gas. Hopefully that is not it.

themodcity 12-12-2010 10:36 PM

My son said that it wasn't at the point where it was completely out of gas...

I am kinda of handy and have worked on cars in the past, but not this one.

Is this a hard job to do?

If not, can someone tell me where I can find some low cost parts? Thanks.

How far did you get...

04RX8man 12-12-2010 10:48 PM

^auto.....from what i gathered about "putting it in park"

I never replaced the coils, could this make the car not start at all?

Yes, it's possible. If a coil went out, then it conceivably it could flood it at some point and also foul the plugs.
There are several ways off de-flooding and it seems as some have to go further than others.
If it is flooded at the very least you will have to pull the plugs, get them really dry, and since you know you should have done the coils, I would do this before trying it again. Coils, and either new plugs or get those out and get'em dry!
I have to warn you it could be other things as well though.
