Engine Warranty Question
I just picked up my 8 form the dealer. New engine has been installed.) Everything seems to be ok...
Bought in '08 with 158 300kms. Do I have warranty for the next 1 700kms or is there some type of manufacturers warranty as well? |
You have warranty on the engine core only for 1700 km.
By "everything seems to be ok" did you mean you've done a rotary-specific compression test and it showed healthy engine compression? Because if you didn't, now would be the time. |
Engine is new. I did compression test and it failed so Mazda replaced my engine at 158300km. I wouldn't do a compression test on a new engine.
|
Not new, rebuilt with some new but mostly used parts.
|
I meant Remanufactured Engine, which is meant to run like new.)
|
@CRAZ8: Be sure to get another compression test before the 1700km mark.
Greetings Thomas |
I will be getting a compression test next week, now have 1600 kms on the reman..
.. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on why: 1. My 8 now seems to struggle to start after being in the sun most of the day.. 2. It also seems to hesitate (just slightly) once engine is warm and I try to give it a bit of gas on the highway. |
Get that test you could have got a bad reman.
|
Can you list what all was replaced along with the engine? Sometimes other items are replaced, sometimes only the core. I'm thinking ignition coils specifically, if they have more than about 25,000mi, they need to be replaced, or you risk the new engine as well.
|
She hasn't given me trouble on start-up anymore... I've had her out for a few good rips, bringing rpm's into 7000s and I'm no longer noticing any hesitation. She almost feels like new again.) I'm still doing the compression test and I will also look into what else was replaced (plugs, wires, ignition coils...)
|
Got my compression tested everything is in the 9's.)
The coils and wires have never been changed though... .. so would that cause the difficult start-ups and loss of power on the highway? I would like to be sure before I go and spend 600$ or 700$ on new coils and plug wires. |
You don't need to spend that much, but you definitely need to get them replaced. Leading cause of dead Renesises :)
You can get coils, leads and spark plugs online for significantly less. I think Mazmart sells them. Just be careful on ebay, there are fakes/low quality ones around, but even your local NAPA will be able to beat dealer pricing. At 500 you could get the BHR coil kit and never have to worry about ignition again. .. and yes it would cause those things. For installation, I'd say if you can hold a wrench, you can change the coils. |
Cool, Thanks Loki

If I have bad coils...
I just had a reman installed but I am experiencing difficult hot starts and loss of power on highway in 6th. So my coils are bad... How much harm does bad coils do to an otherwise healthy engine? Is it worse if I rev high as opposed to low? I have new coils on order, am I harming my good engine in the meantime? Any info would be appreciated, I'd hate to ruin an engine that has compression tested in the 9's all around.

Sounds more like a clogged cat than coil failure. Though it could be cat failure from a coil failure, that's easy to do.also possible that it isn't your coils, but the dealer tech failing to reset the e-shaft profile, leading to misfires leading to cat clogging.
Coil problems manifest in low RPM or high RPM, but it isn't gear dependant. Both cases you mention have exhaust flow problems in their symptom list. 6th gear = more flow, and hot = exhaust still sitting in front of the clog, making it harder to crank properly (since airflow moves when cranking) |
Does it harm the engine to drive until coils are replaced?
|
Instant immediate harm? no. But yeah, you shouldn't keep driving with ignition problems, or with a cat problem. If you have to, keep the rpms as low as you can, and keep your foot as light on the throttle as possible.
(Your new thread was merged with your old one) |
Would a clogged cat show up when doing Evap check as well as testing air flow system on a test drive (dealer tech didn't notice any abnormalities)? Would a clogged cat cause misfires? Is there any way to test if cat is clogged??

Thanks for the info, I'll be checking the cat before anything else.
