i think this topic cropped up once but would like to revisit it again.
do we have to use mineral oil instead of synthetic?
i thought it was just for the run in!

mates collecting their cars from mm.
could you get the offical word on this.
very much appreciated.

and those who switch from either oil.
did you find any significant difference.

I think most of us here have already switched to syn. Don't think anyone would have a problem with syn, over mineral.
Some here are still trying different grade of syn to see the difference they'll get.

I would be interested to hear from those who got theirs from MM too.

I was told.. advice... warn.... only to use mineral oil....

was told last time, not to use syn for my old merc. D oil will be too fine 4 d engine. Dunno whether the same reason apply 4 d 8 anot....

It seemed one of the guy here mentioned that he use the HKS 10w-40 grade. Which is fully synthetic, I think he will swear by it....lol

But according to the note there, 10w-40 oil grade is not recommended for any engine especially those with diesel engine.

Oh well read and interprete. I am having a problem here as well. My new 8 is already in and hoping to pick it up next week. The COE went up last bidding but luckily I get the agent to qoute on guarranteed COE.

I was wondering can all the 8 owner here list down the engine oil they use.....that would be fabulous !

Ahh...the oil debate rages on! Do a search, especially on the technical forum. Lots of arguments over which is better etc etc etc. Locally, some of the forum members had a meeting with a former engineer from Mazda Japan, who recommended synthetic oil. Theres a thread on this somewhere.

Anyway, I'm using HKS rotary oil. So far so good. Never had to top up in between service.

So that means, everyone who has an 8 has to carry a bottle of oil somewhere in their boot ? Hmmm... let hope something like Neon's case never happen to me. (Crossing my fingers)

Oh by the way, looks like I am sticking to the oil they gave....20W50 Castrol RX....dino.

It's pretty normal for rotary to consume oil, so don't treat the oil topping as a problem.
Frankly, not sure if its necessary a good thing if you don't have to top up your oil??

Thanks guys. Was wondering anyone of you know any grade of oil meant for tropical countries. Seemed that all the one that had W (if I remember right) kinda indicated that the viscosity is fine for winter use. We never had winter, so what the point of getting an oil grade that had such wide range of performance. The only way it seemed for the lub to stay in a relatively narrow viscosity range over such a wide temperature fluctuation is to add synthetic polymer which does not contribute to the function of the lubricating the parts.

Couldn;t find any threat in Garage Forum on this. Maybe I didn;t search hard enough. Anyone know about this ?

Also, any guys here who had their car shine and maintain with 3tremendous PPS system ? Saw that in one of the magazine. I kinda lazy to do washing and waxing. Did for almost the first two years for my current car and since then, just send for - foam manual wash...
I was using 3M wax for car and switch to Auri (something that had the teflon ingredient), it seemed that this coating last much longer than the 3M wax. Much longer time needed btw waxing.

Ya . wat M-ster said was rite........ It is very common and normal for Rotary engine to consume engine oil! Used to own a Rotary RX7 Turbo and used to go up to K.L. with a group of Rotary Lover.
Normally, out of 5 cars, at least 2 or 3 have to top up the engine oil when reached K.L.
But that was the 12A engine. the new RX8 may have the same problem cos it is still a ROTARY !

My advice For those Rotary owners, it is a good pratice to keep a bottle of engine oil in your car if you are going for a long distence trips.

clocking up almost 550km. Checked my oil level (did not follow manual here - did it while it was cold - first thing in the morning...didn;t want to get burn) the next day after I got the car. Checked again today - no change in level - still right on the top mark. Oil still looked really clean (and probably sounding really like an idiot this time)

Anyone find this different ? Can;t wait for the 1000km mark...right now, didn;t dare to hold rpm above 4k for long.

I think any grade is fine, really. Most of the engine oil we see here on shelf are PAO (polyalphaolefine - means carbon or organic base molecular chain). Both of the synthetic and mineral are of the same base. Exception is that synthetic is made and those mineral type are from distillation process from the crude petroluem. So, synthetic tend to have less impurities. Been doing a lot of research on oil.

Anyway, the easiest way is to stay with the same grade and make of oil. And topping up with synthetic you get off the shelf from Caltex or Mobil is also no problem in my opinion. In US it seemed you can get glycol based engine oil, and this do seemed to have some mixing problem with the PAO type. So, if you are still running in, topping up is very little, just a get a quart or a liter of the same oil.

Am still running 20W-50 Castrol. thinking of changing to AMSOIL 20W-50 2000 series...after the 5Kkm, but this oil is F%$#8 difficult to get in Singapore. No one reply on my thread on this AMSOIL oil.

Some of the guys went to Autobacs, it seemed that they have a synthetic under the name of TRUST for rotary engine but when I wnet to there, they say new stock only coming in mid or late Jul.

speakin of oil again....
understd the renesis runs hot...but din expect it too b so hot.was in a slow movin traffic,the oil temp climb to almost 100 deg C(nite).im not comparin thou.mi last vehicle onli max @ 90 on such situation even in the day.
juz surprise tat the oil temp climbs on a rotary...im really new to it

Relax. Mine constantly at 100-110. Hard rev = occasional 120 :P

I called up MM service dept. and to my they will be using Shell Helix non synthetic oil. I thought MM could still got hold of the Dino oil instead.
