engine light
I am about to purchase an '04 RX-8 with 36,000 miles on it. i have received a carfax report and everything is clean. i test drove the car and it ran fine, however i noticed the engine light on. i asked the dealer why it was on and he said it was because they were putting cheap gas into it and it should only take premium gas... i dont see how this would really make the engine light go on, is there anything i can do to confirm what the light is on for before i pay for the entire thing??

Take it to autozone, advance autoparts, napa, or any other auto parts store and they can read the code of the check engine light.
Chances are its just from them not screwing on the gas cap tight enough. |
oh, and I see your purchasing in december, this is a pretty bad car to drive in snow. I would read up in this forum about purchasing new tires/wheels if you live anywhere near ice/snow

pull the code out @ your local Autozone or whoever can pull the code out for you for free. Post it up. |
they wont let me take the car anywhere without paying for the whole thing, and i dont know if i should if its not just them not screwing on the gas cap tight enough. if its something serious i would want the dealer to take care of it before i buy it.

Don't buy it. If it's really because of cheap gas (sounds like BS to me, but let's say it is) it's done damage to something to cause the light to come on.
If any used car seller refuses to let you have a car looked at by an independent mechanic, walk away from it. When you find an undamaged car from a reputable seller, look into Blizzaks for snow. Check out the tire & wheel forum here, and browse Tire Rack's site. If you want Nav, get one of the name brand units after the holidays. Prices have plummetted in the past couple of months, and there should be even better deals in January. Check out sites like gpslodge.com for info and reviews. Ken |

I mean, seriously if you want a Rx-8, first thing you gotta do is make sure if this is the car for you, test drive, and other stuff, you know. |
