Engine Light On

On Christmas Eve, i was getting ready to leave work and when i started my car the Engine Light was on. I then checked the gas cap and it was fine. Its been three days now and i called mazda and made an appointment for tomorrow. They stated that it was probably the gas cap.

Today i went to my friends shop and had him check it in the scanner real quick. It stated that there was and evap leak. the car drives fine and i notice no problems. I heard about some gas caps are craked and cause the CEL to go off. Ill post what they tell me tomorrow.

I was wondering if anyone had any similar problems.

oh yeah a bunch of people have the engine light on. My light has been on for two years. Itis because of my sport catalyzer; it trips the o2 sensor. I have even tried to reset the computer and that only worked for about four days. Basically if you don't notice any change in your cars performance than it is probably nothing. However its always nice to know for sure

Went to dealership and they replaced the gas cap. They stated that the gas cap was cracked and that was causing the leak detection. They replaced the cap and all seems well for now.

Sorry to post on your thread Alucard

But i think i might have the same problem.
I just got a CEL today. when i started up the car after a 36 mile trip.
It was not a blinking CEL (thank GOD), no power lost no problems at all. the car drives fine just the CEL is on.
When i called up my local Mazda Dealer they told me that it might be the gas cap. They didn't even want to service my car until i cycled the car for a week.
I called another Mazda dealer and they just didn't want another RX-8 on their service lot since they said they have 6 waiting there already (don't know if that's true or not). Just thought that was rude of them to deny me service because they do not want to deal with another RX-8 problem but what ever i won't be go there anyways i just wanted a second opinion.
So i did some searching around the RX8club tech fourm and found that the CEL should go off after 5-6 cycles of the engine if it is a gas cap issue.
I just wanted some clarifications. How common is it that a CEL will occur if the gas cap is not tight (it seem tight to me when i opened up my gas can to tighten it up)?
I'm still searching around to see what else it could be.
Can't bring the car to service since the dealer siad to wait a week before they will even schedule me an appointment to take a look at it.

I guess there is nothing i can do but drive the car everyday for about a week before any dealer will take a look at it if the CEL does not go away.
Hopefully it does.

Thanks for any advices and inputs

Heres what it says from the Service Sheet:

Customer states check engine light on
Scan for codes P0455 test for evap leak gas cap bad
F008XDX .20E
replace gas cap retest evap system clear code
quality checked and test drove to verify repairs

Thanks
I still have to wait a week before the dealer would even take a look at the car.
Hopefully it's nothing big.
do you mind if i keep posting in your thread Alucard?

Glad to hear that a dealer decided P0455 was the gas cap...it's officially the code for a large evaporative system leak. That sounds scarier than the if the code was labeled "tiny leak."

My CEL went on when I started my car yesterday evening to go home from work. I've got a Harrison scanner, so when I got home I plugged it in and read P0455. A search here brought up this thread, and some others. Gas cap looked OK, but it does unscrew pretty easily so it might have been loose.

I cleared the code, and it did not come back on this morning. We'll see if that was all it was.

I learned from my search that this test occurs while the car is off, and if the fault is detected the CEL will come on immediately upon starting the car. Does anyone know if that characteristic is unique to this code? Or are there others that can come on immediately, as opposed to coming on while driving?

Ken
