I've done a search but read conflicting things so thought I should start a thread.

To reset your ECU, what do you need to do?

I read that you need to disconnect the battery and then pump the brakes 20 times. I've also read that you just turn on the ignition and pump the brakes 20 times.

I want to reset mine because I recently had my exhaust replaced (it was bent) after I got the N flash. I'm guessing that the bend would have resulted in less air being forced out and the ECU doing things differently.

Anyways, if anyone knows for sure how to reset it, that'd be great. Thanks!

Disconnecting the battery and holding the brake pedal in will clear the ECU, but I always use the brake pump method so I don't have to reprogram my radio station presets and don't lose my tripmeter mileage.

The brake method is to turn the key to the 'on' position (past accessory, but not all the way to ignition), and tap the brake pedal 20 times- but you have a short window to do this in- I think it's 8 seconds or so. On the 20th tap, the oil pressure "gauge" needle will sweep back and forth to indicate the NVRAM clearing was successful, purging the ECU's 'learned' data.

You mention having had the new N Flash. Doesn't the ECU automatically get reset when you get a new flash? I would think so.

Is everyone sure that the oil pressure sweep is still a function of the "N" flash, that is the flash I have and for the life of me I can not get that needle to sweep when trying to clear the KAM in my 8.

I wasn't sure, so I just went out in the garage and tried it, and yes, mine still sweeps (I got the 'N' last week).

Crap, I must be doing something wrong, I am hitting that brake pedal as fast as I can, don't know what is keeping mine from working. Oh well.

I think pumping the pedal 20 times in 8 seconds just clears one component of the ecu memory - the eccentric shaft profile. I don't think it clears CEL codes and other stuff. If you disconnect the battery, press the brake to clear any stored charge (via the brake lights) and leave it disconnected for a few minutes, the stored CEL codes and other data is cleared for sure.

I thought that the "learned" memory is in the KAM which is what is cleared by pumping the brakes.

There have been different revisions of the factory code in the ECU of your 8 and they all have some sort of letter associated with the part number they go by and the latest one is refered to as "N"

^^^ Depends on how you drive? The car will learn how you drive and adjust accordingly. Now if you drive like grandpa on sedatives, your 8 will have slower throttle response. The opposite is true too! Speed racer on cocaine will give your 8 a "hair trigger" response. Awhile back, someone's mechanic (Stew I think) put it like this:

Imagine your driving habit from a scale 1-10. Every 5km or so, the car takes a data point and grades you. So over time, an average of your driving habit scale is made and the car responds accordingly.

Some people (like myself) that after a hard driving day (or track day), the 8 will be more "twitchy". So it won't hurt to reset the car and the car will relearn.
