drilling hole in throttle plate - solution to rough idle issue?
I was kicking around the idea of buying a new throttle plate and drilling a small hole in it to allow more air in when idling as I have read before about people doing this mod on other cars.
since we have no way to adjust idle otherwise, carefully drilling a small hole and enlarging it until you get to the desired RPM might be a easy solution. My aim in this is to get rid of the vibration we feel at idle. Any thoughts or issues on this? would the DBW system throw a fit? |

Any thoughts or issues on this? would the DBW system throw a fit? how much difference the revi make on your car??? as far as idle is concerned, made a huge diff on mine. next week i think dealer is going to replace plugs and check motor mount. new batt, blah blah. btw i am at ~29k miles it was getting worse with time. think a lot of it is plugs, but the revi settled it down a lot. beers |
I have a 2005 RX-8 and don't have an idle issue, I would propose that you find the problem and fix it rather than attempt to bandaid it. FWIW, the idle control motor will only attempt to compensate for a drilled hole. If it gets too far outside it's workable range of adjustment you may only cause a worse problem.

I keep on reading threads about rough idle. I too have bad idle, but in my opinion its not a negative thing. I'm saying this becasue I driven acouple of more expensive sports cars eg, NSX, 911 turbo etc.. And they all had "rough" idle
If I had a luxury car and it had a "rough" idle it would bother me. but since the rx8 is a sports car isnt the idle suppose to be rough?? |
in my opininion "rough idle" is because we are less insulated fromand closer to the working bits of the car.

It has to do with the flashes.. I never had a jerky stick till I went to N..

Drilling a hole in the throttle plate just sounds like a terrible, horrible idea. Take it to the dealer and make sure it has most current flash first. Then check mounts, and then ignition. |
lots of other things to check on before breaking out the drill bits becomes an option

Looks like an old question, but....
Car idles smooth as silk with decent plugs/coils, and MAF is clean. One other thing is check grounds. They can mess with it as well. $100 thread has this and a few other things. |
We have means to adjust our throttle electronically now, drilling the TBwould just be stupid.
Rx8s don't have a rough idle, if yours is then it's time to do a check. |

wasn't there a flash for this a few years back? To smooth the idle out and reduce vibration. check to see if this was done.

That said, for anything reading this in the future: if idle is rough, checking the ignition system + motor mounts would be the first step. |

Cheers mate... i dont mind themz... these 'people' always exist... Anyway reason being... I had idling issues... the rpm would drop like it was going to die and came back alive... Jeff, Mazdamaniac said my MAF was reading like crazy... It was showing alot of air or compensate the loss of air or something along those lines.... After dismantling the 'whole car' i believe it was the throttle body or the fuel pump... Checked fuel pump was still ok... i thinkz... So check throttle body... It seemed clean... Rotary specialist and authrorised one to boot, recommended to drill a tiny tiny hole if i wanted to save cost...
