Draining Oil

Long story short I overfilled my oil by a noticable margin a couple days ago and it has been bothering me ever since. I am going in for an overchange on tuesday anyhow, but just want to drain out some of the extra oil. (my guess is about half a quart).

Do I just pull the drain plug and drain out x amount of oil and replace it? Is it that simple?

I haven't had any idle problems and my APV/SSV seem to be working fine (no bogging down in higher revs) so I don't think I have any overfill associated problems. ( I don't have a hexigonal screw driver head for the MAF and have a AEM CAI so I can't exactly just look in the air box).

Thanks for your quick responses!

Yes... just keep checking the fluid level until its good.

Allen keys are cheap.
Take a trip to the local Auto store and pic up a metric set and MAF cleaner.
Both are only a few dollars.

Alright. Post game report.

The drain plug is virtually an all or nothing process. It was dribbling out quite slow and a quarter of a turn later it was a gusher (note I did this by reach and no jack so my leverage wasn't the best). My draining half a quart quickly became draining about 4.5 quarts.

I did learn how ridiculously easy this process is though, and will be attempting an oil change on my own at a later date as I essentially did one without replacing the filter which can't be too technical. The drain plug is not hard to find at all. I would recommend people try to change their own oil.

Plus I feel like a man now. Did some car work...

Did change the engine oil last Saturday for the first time by myself with a PL 6000 Pela Oil Extractor. (RX-8HP in the Netherlands)
Oil extracted via dipstickfunnel at drivers side of engine.
Car was jacked up at passenger side; managed to extract 4,9-5 ltrs (5 quarts) from a total engineoilcontent (incl 2 oil coolers) of 6,7 ltrs.
This is fairly better than the indication from the service manual, stating an extraction of 3,3 resp 3,5 ltrs. (incl. oil filter) during normal service at a Mazda-servicestation.
After completion of the procedure I jacked up the Rex at the drivers side rather high, in order to check the possibility of additional discharge of oil via the oildrainplughole.
Not any drop followed...........I am rather enthousiastic about this method of oilchange and namely the relatively large content that could be extracted, which was considerably more as with the standard service procedure.

Congrats. The filter can be a bit of a pain, but it's certainly doable. Make sure you have the proper cap wrench. I use one short and one long extension with a universal joint in between. Also I pack a couple of shop rags around the base of the filter before removal to catch any mess.

As far as draining a bit of excess oil, yeah manipulating the drain plug is finicky, and messy even if you succeed. Search the forum for "Fumoto Valve". I've had one installed since 2004 and it makes oil changes a breeze, you don't have to worry about crush washers, and if you need to drain some overfill you can do so easily with no fuss.

Me too...this is the way to do it... I get way more out than thru the hole. I jack the car up high with a floor jack from the front 1st, suck oil, then jack the passenger side and lower the front, suck more. I get almost all of it, there's nothing left to speak in the coolers. Almost a complete drain and I don't even get hands dirty lol!

Hi, Spin9k,
I am interested to know:
Do you jack up the front of the car in the middle or driver/passenger side?....... and then lower it on 4 wheels and jack up on passenger side with jack on front or rear of the car?
Could you explain some more?
Many thanks in advance..............
Best regards, Ruud

Very interesting... I might consider getting one of these pumps.

As my car is lowered, jack passenger side a bit so I can get front jack in under...then...

Jack from front middle...suck oil.

Next raise passenger side jack to snug...release front jack.....suck oil.

Lower car from side jack, add oil back.

ps I have two floor jacks, I wouldn't trust the Mazda jack.
