Does a 2nd generation Rx8 engine go easily into a 1st gen?
 

My 2004 Rx8 engine is starting to lose its luster. My friend had a 2011 Rx8 for about 2000 miles of its engine life and totaled it..... :lol: As ridiculous as that is, I don't make fun of him because he is willing to give me the completely intact engine at no cost :)

Would it be easy (for a professional, not myself) to mount the 2011 rotary into the 2004? I have zero experience with engine swaps and I don't know how similar the two generations are.

Define easy?! Other peeps be saying NO n I have had This Conversation with other professionals and they have given me a multitude of reasons why it's not as easy as u wld think BUT it's a damn sight easier than doing a 20b, 2j or ls1 or re conversion. So I'd say YES it's easy in that light. Mind u the same professionals advised me to give the 20b conversion a miss, n it turns out to be easier than they led me to believe. I guess anything is possible with time n money.

The answer is NO. It would be a lot of work to make this conversion, no mater how "easily" is defined.

"easy" is not the word you should be worried about defining, posting an argument over it is fairly definitive in itself :)

Let me put it in this light then, in case u all missed it.

He is being given a free motor!! If he has to spend a little to make it work then so be it. Go for it I say. Everything is possible, but don't expect it to just work as there's a multitude of things that need to be done. ;-)

I wish someone would give me a free motor.

Money will make it work, more than buying a series 1 motor and the installing it then installing a turbo and all supporting mods. It will take a lot for a S2 motor to go in to an S1 8.

Sell the "free motor", and purchase the proper one you need.

From what I know ( which isn't much) if u wanna use ur s1 wire harness n computer, injectors etc Then it should be ok, as far as I know the block is no different to the the s1-surely. ??

Why can't he Just use the s2 short block? Swap everything over including front cover, loom, ecu etc? That's dead easy to do, for a rotary mechanic.

Then u also have to add Interior stuff like Odometer etc since u swaped the ecu... ... it's not an easy swap.

Easiest Thing would be to take the short block without front cover and plug the 2 top omp nozzles ... but wait ... then there is another problem .. i think he s2 has no rear oil pressure regulator lolz

SO .... if u want to take the pain (i would descibe it like that) to swap an S2 into an S1 then ... it's at least not EASY!

why plug the oil nozzles? i know someone that used s2 housings when he rebuilt his s1 engine and split the omp lines

No, I meant he cld use his current ECU with loom and front cover and just use the s2 short block.. As far as the rear oil pressure reg we'll I'm clueless..

That may be a highly probable understatement. Just because you won't search and we won't be bothered with repeating all the intimate details all over again with a sugar coated spoon doesn't mean that you haven't already been told the correct answer repeatedly.

There are numerous physical, electrical, and software control differences between the two. While some peripheral parts are interchangeable, many are not and making the conversion will be complex, expensive, and in the end has little to no benefit. If you believe it's possible to make it work for less than it costs to use the correct engine then please show us how it's done.
