Do all RX-8 get oil in their Air Box?
My air box was loaded with oil from the breather tube, it even has a large spot of oil on the Air filter. Do all RX's do this?
|
mine didn't have any oil on the filter after 28,000 miles.
in fact, the filter was kinda dry - green air filter which is drop in replacement for stock. |
Nope, but I did get peanut butter on my chocolate.

If you overfill the motor with oil, then yes you will get some oil in the airbox and MAF.
|
The '06s have a revised design that prevents oil from getting into the filter.
|
Nope never.
Heaard it's caused by over filling, but really hasn't been confirmed. Would you like to over fill and let us know? |
My dealer found oil in my intake. They said it was caused by backpressure due to a clogged catilytic converter. I didn't get as far as the air filter.

I actually have been curious about this ever since I replaced my air filter with a K&N drop in filter and found a big brown spot on the oem filter and oil residue at the bottom of the box. I saw that people were blaming over-filling the car with oil and so I tested the theory out.
My dealer always overfills the oil whenI get it changed for free and I drain the excess when I get home (yes, I am a penny pincher). I checked before I went to the dealer and found no oil in the box or on the filter. After the oil change I checked the oil level and it was, as always, overfilled. The oil reached the top of the flat part of the dips stick. I drove the car for 150 miles (beeped quite a few times) and checked the air filter and box and nothing was there and then I drained the excess oil. Therefore.... I have no idea why this happens. Hope that helps! :dunno: |

I've never over filled the oil and only have 3.5K on the car. I have read the thread about the catch cans but wanted to see if this was a issue with all users first. From the replies it appears abnormal to be getting oil in the air box and filter. Off to the dealer.

they'll hopefully get the kit to update you with the 2006 pcv style set up.
|
30k miles and never any oil in the filter.
|
35k miles, 2004 build date of 10/03. Never a drop of oil in the intake.
|
The box is dry as a bone and always has been.

should I ask the dealer to not overfill the oil? They did that last time I had an oil change...
I wonder why they do it... |

:rollingla and just so my replies to this thread will be semi-usefull...no, i've never found any oil in there. Bone dry. As mentioned, i've heard that overfill causes that. |
Well I just got the car back from the dealer and this is a new one on me. The mechanic said that there was oil in the air box because I was filling it with oil to fast. Based on the position of the breather tube on the oil neck I could maybe see a little oil going into the tube but not the amount that was there. Add on to that I average a quart of oil every 750 miles with the last quart gone at around 550 and I start to wounder even more.
We filled it up and agreed to both monitor the next quart burned. Reasonable but a pain considering I have kept accurate records of oil consumption so far. What do you think about this oil fill to fast statement? |
raptor, i have oil on my filter as well.

PS Don't know if you recall but I believe we meet at the RX-8 get together at Dave and Busters late winter/early spring of this year. |

Anyway, I am waiting for the dealership to get my radio face plate in and then I'm going in for new rotors/pads and the e-brake replacement. I will ask them about the oil as well as the annoying rattle coming from the drivers side near the airbox when the clutch is out (noise disappears when clutch is in). I'm going to have to start keeping a list of all the quirks I want to ask them about! |
