Diagnostic Connector

Hello, I have searched but to no avail. Can anyone point me in the right direction to a pin out for the diagnostic connector under the dash? I am attempting to install a new MXL dash and am looking to see if the connections i need are available at that plug? I am specifically looking for the pin locations of CAN +, CAN -, Ground, and possibly a power (9-16v dc). If anyone can help me i would greatly appreciate it.

Best I can do. Maybe this will give you some ideas.

Edit: Image #2 is where DLC2 connects to the PCM. I assume you have an MT car. There is a slightly different diagram for the AT.

Obdii....

As part of the spec for OBDII, it has to be within 100mm of the steering column.

So look where the column meets the plastic, and that will be it, it's a two inch long slot with contacts inside.

I appreciate the help guys, i will check it out. I do know where it is, i just need to find what each connection on the plug does.

looking at the above diagrams, i am having a hard time figuring out which one is what. I am trying to set up an MXL Pista dash display, does anyone else have any experience hooking one of these up?

Go48 04-08-2006 06:58 PM

Doesn't that unit come with a connector that will mate with the DLC2 connector?

A word of caution is called for here. If your car is still under warranty I would advise against permanently installing such a unit. I can almost guarantee that a dealer will void most of your warranty if they realize you have wired in, or even if you have ever connected, such a unit. They have voided some warranties for much less.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but it's better that you realize the ramifications of this going in rather than be surprised if your engine blows and the dealer says--rightly or wrongly--it was a result of your mucking around with the PCM.

Silverarrow 04-08-2006 07:06 PM

oh, no worries, i am turbo charged already...warranty was thrown out the window a long time ago. It does not come with a specific connector, only wires labled as can +, can -, and ground. I also need a 9-16 v dc pwr supply too (was hoping to find that in the connector also. If i could buy a connector already set up that would be great.

yeah, that diagram is nice, but it doesnt' tell me what each connection is. It tells me what color the wire is (i think that's what the two letters are for?) l/r, w/b, b/r, g/b, b/l or does that mean something else?

Either way from the schematic it looks like B/L and B are grounds and that G/B and L/W are goint to the ECU. But what are the A and B in the circle? Also what does the 10 in the circles mean? L/R seems to go from teh positive side of the battery but that would just be 12v right? Is the A CAN+ and the B CAN -? Anyone who can make some more sense out of this for me would be greatly appreciated. I do not have the benefit of having the entire wiring manual in front of me to look at a key.

Got it working. Now it is time to fab up a bracket. Thanks for all of your help!

Here they are...as promised -

Edit - see below

Second one shows what the sequential shiftlights look like (completely adjustable) as well as one of the warning lights (6 total - 3 on each side, also completely configurable for lows or highs and threshold). This one was alerting me to my 0.8 lambda afr (need to reset that value) Overall a very cool toy. Allows you to use the factory sensors through the diagnostic port under the dash. With the help from here hooking it up was pretty easy, once I figured out what each wire (4 total) did. Like i said, didn't buy it to use in this car, but took very little time to fab up the removable temporary panel to mount it (velcro and windlace).

Next step is installing all of the sensors i want on my 85 rx7 gsl-se for auto x/track days.

sweet jeezus, please delete those oversized pics and use these below instead

Do you have access to Mazda Motorsports? They sell a mounting kit for this in the new Miata, might work in the RX-8 too. Wish I had the budget for one of these, that would be so sweeeet ...

Silverarrow 04-11-2006 03:17 AM

haha, again, thanks for the help, yes i do have access to that program...i was hoping to see a discount on this item through them but i did not. Anyway, i saw that mount for the new mx5 on their pictures of the new spec car but did not see a part number for it yet, and i don't plan on keeping it in the Rx8 anyhow. 10.00 has to be cheaper than what they want to charge anyway...on a side note re: budget, it is amazing to me that some people will spend almost as much for a 3 gauge pod from japanparts with Defi gauges in it as it is for this thing, and this one is so much more powerful! Guess it is kinda function over form (if you must have analog gauges that is...)

0000-07-5804 $53.24 , so not really worth it in your case

that display rocks, plus it's a 8mb datalogger to boot, did you buy it new or used?

Silverarrow 04-11-2006 10:05 AM

new, online (no tax). Yeah, I am still learning all of the things it can do, but I am very excited about all of the possibilities. I also didn't like how that mx5 panel puts it in the center console/radio area, guess i could have cut it and fit it somewhere else. Thanks for all the help again TeamRx8.

that must have been a preliminary setup, the current description for the Miata Cup parts lists says "Steering Pod/Dash Mount Kit"

r0tor 04-11-2006 05:48 PM

i wish they would have something smaller like the Greddy Informeter (but actually work with our cars)... thats awesome though

TeamRX8 04-11-2006 05:56 PM

you mean like this; approx. 5" x 3.75"?

r0tor 04-11-2006 05:59 PM

hmm... didn't see that

BTW, here's the diagram schematic, I sent a copy to AiM out of hope they'd include it into the manual:

this is irrelevant to the thread and i have no idea if it works on our cars... but kinda cool

TeamRX8 04-11-2006 06:28 PM

no, the vehicles it's designed for don't have a CAN network operating system

Silverarrow 04-11-2006 09:35 PM

Yeah, that MyChron3 is super small, they make steering wheels with the mounts on them. I liked the little bigger display, but that one has most of the same functionality. Same amount of memory 8mb, but only 5 channels instead of 8 like the Pista. There is one below the pista (same larger case) called the strada, but no datalogging, which sort of takes all the fun out of it.

Mike

TeamRX8 04-12-2006 04:27 AM

No, the Strada datalogs but with only 128kb memory, so maybe 15 or 20 minutes worth tops, I could live with that but the bummer is it doesn't have the accelerometer capability, which makes me :( since it's a more reasonable $1000

Silverarrow 05-01-2006 09:08 PM

Hmm...i was trying to find that spec miata dash panel, i entered the part number on mazdaspeedmotorsports.com and got a "no part found" error. Any ideas, i think i may buy one of these to put the mxl in the 85 gsl-se, as i am having a hard time finding a satisfactory mounting solution...
