Decarb+MSP16=not so loud K&N?

Just went and got the MSP16 tues. and while I was ther waiting I got the decarbonization done. The tech did this twice beacause I have the 1st gen intake manifold(no longer have a warranty to get the new one) and it made a difference. Can feel a little stronger pull at low rpms and smoother power above 6k. Here's where I think it gets wierd. I have the K&N II and was experiencing the 'loudness' woes that have been discussed in some other threads, this went in conjuction with the whole 'loss of power' troubles i was having apparently due to off ignition timing at high rpms and high temps. For one reason or the other the MSP16 and or the decarb have corrected this problem. My K&N no longer makes the extremely loud clatter that it once did, and the sound is nicely balanced with the high flow cat and exhaust notes,,,, just wondering if anybody can lend some insight on this:dunno:
-?does the ignition timing correction have something to do with an amplified echo in the intake manifold? ? or was this a happy unidentified coisindence?
- really don't know but would like to find out ....

thats interesting. my car did not change at all with the msp-16. of course i had no power loss to begin with...

i got the power increase but my intake sounds the same......not too loud but not too quiet either

My K&N V2 was realy loud when I got it. It was used and very dirty. I clened it up real good and it was real quiet. As it gets dirty it gets loud. Odd but never had any loss of power issues with this 8. I just got the new flash that everyone is getting and my car did have more zoom and better gear shifting :smoker:

What I'm going to do next is get them cans and clean out me Engine :)

I also had the decarb done last week. since I was out of warranty, it was not covered. Didn't Mazda increase the powertrain warranty to 60K and engine warranty to 80K for 04 RX8s? Should this have covered the decarb? Anybody know the email address that I can contact in Mazda regarding this warranty issue? I figured it won't hurt to ask...

Decarb will be covered under certain conditions. but most likely wouldn't be covered if you're not in B2B warranty.

Here is the "TSB" for the engine DE-CARBON. Look on the last page#15 and see it is part of the 8yr. 100K miles warranty, you should print out and bring to dealer.

This is what it says....

repair.
• Warranty term coverage is 8 years (96 months) from the original warranty start date, with a 100,000

Thanks a lot...I will take this to the dealer and try to get them to reimburse me. I did not take it in for lack of power though....I took it for engine cranks but does not start problem....that also has the exact same warranty information.

nycgps 04-18-2009 11:27 PM

Im willing to bet they wont cover it.

teknics 04-18-2009 11:50 PM

yea unless they told you you needed it would it be free, requesting it is not free as there is no diagnostics involved so they dont know if your car even needed it as they must do in a warranty situation where they diag the problem.

I didn't request it on my own. They told me that I needed it to fix my stalling problem. Hopefully, I can get them to cover it. It's not coming out of there pocket. So, I can't think why they should have any problem with it. If they don't, I will definitely try to talk to folks at Mazda as well. Hope, I get reimbursed. :)

shazy 04-19-2009 11:25 AM

If it's just 20$ let it go:)

balkhu 04-19-2009 11:30 AM

hahaha.....I would have if it was 20 bucks....they charged me 460 bucks....

balkhu 04-19-2009 11:48 AM

as for the performance change...i see no improvement in power....but I never felt loss of it before either.....the car is super quiet now...no idle vibration at all...

teknics 04-19-2009 05:47 PM

if they told *you* that you needed it, it should be free if you're still in the warranty zone. id talk to mazda corp.

kevin.

balkhu 04-19-2009 08:15 PM

yep, they told "me". I even have this written down on the service report they gave me.

yea you should be given that for nothing if i understand policy. This is assuming the above statement by someone that it states about the warranty length on the decarb tsb, i didnt double check that info. So if i were you id just reread the info out there and decide if you feel you should have to pay.

kersh4w 04-19-2009 09:35 PM

i told them i wanted the msp16 done. they said my car is fine, it doesnt need it. which it was.

i rolled my eyes and said..

"i've been feeling a loss of power and i dont know what it is."

my service advisor chuckled and then had it done.

edit: for free.

balkhu 04-21-2009 06:23 AM

the dealer agreed that it should have been covered and says that he will issue a full refund check within a week. Thanks guys for pointing out this warranty information to me. :)
