D585 Coils, Which ones to buy?
 
A couple of my current D585 coils are going bad, so im looking to buy some replacements but im kind of stuck on which ones to buy..

The current D585 coils I have were purchased used for very cheap so I don't think they are real D585 coils made by AC Delco.

What would be the best choice for me, to buy 4 new AC Delco coils for $200 at least, or should I buy 4 made by standard motor products for $80, their part number is UF262

Does anybody know if the AC delco coils are that much better to dish out the extra cash? I even see some being sold as cheap as $15 a coil but they are made by global automotive which i've never heard of but aren't they required to be at last as good as the D585 coils in pretty much every way except how long they last since the AC Delco coils are OEM for the GMC yukons?

Im pretty sure Ac delco is oem for all gmc/cheveys. I've never had a gmc or chevy to have bad coils. Ive seen a few over 200k miles

Yeah I do plan on keeping this car for a long time i guess ill just be smart and buy the AC delco's for the win

Standard Motor Products got their stuff from other OEM, it shouldn't be that bad

u can just get one see where they are made from, if anything just return it for full refund.

never go for the cheapest "no name" brand. u gonna regret badly.

I remember when that ignition system you have was for sale Lol. :yesnod: Chances are, the ignition coils were probably made by Herko on eBay. Had a similar experience when I got a used system for $40 with no name ignition coils and the car ended up performing worse cause of it. Ended up going BHR and my mind is at now ease. :icon_tup: Definitely go for AC Delco and never look back. :smile:

Yeah these are the "BHR" coils that one guy sold me lol, at first it honestly felt a bit better then the new oem SMP coils I had at the higher rpm's but a couple months later I starting to get some misses at idle, it felt like the coils might have been bad but when I checked them with my timing light I could't see any misses, that was before the winter. Now that winter is over the idle is getting really bad, almost staling the engine at times, i checked them again with my timing light a couple days ago and I only tested 3 out of the 4 and 1 was really bad, 1 didn't seem to have any problems and the other was missing but not as bad as the first one.

So yeah I think its safe to say AC Delco all the way, these others brands don't seem to compare.

On a real AC delco D585 coil are there any stampings? my current coils have no stampings at all

Ok I went out to double check coil failiure and noticed the timing light signal pickup was getting the signal from multiple wires at the same time.... its a cheap timing light i purchased from ebay for 20 bucks.

I managed to pull the wires away from each other just enough to get no more signal interference and it looked like there was no misses at all, the coils actually checked out to be just fine.

I purchased a new set of spark plugs for the summer a couple weeks ago so I decided to put them in now, and it made all the difference there is no more idle issues it idles really stable now. Haven't had the chance to test if it had more power but im sure it will

Here is what the spark plugs look like, Really Nasty!

You can see the spark plug to the far right, its center electrode is completely covered in carbon, like it hasn't fired in a long time

This is the result of driving in high gear and keeping the rpms down a lot, those plugs only have 35,000km on them, I might still get the AC delco coils for peace of mind.

35,000km for plugs on an rx8 is a long time. Don't think I've gone more than 25,000 and try to change every 20,000.

Im glad things are back to normal, got all the power back! super fun to drive again and it idles so smooth. I was getting worried that I was losing compression because the engine has 170,000KM on it but its running really good again it warm starts same as a cold start and im hoping this engine will last to 250,000KM that would be amazing

Glad to see things are all back to normal! That's great you have that much miles, I'm barely hitting 55,000 on mine and hoping for the best as well.

you can find true 585 coils for about $34 each(correction $41 each unless you buy an odd number set) using the proper keywords to filter out the crap and checking the reputation of the seller and their other parts. just an FYI.

Yeah I found them on ebay for $160 US for 4, but since im canadian there is another $40 US for shipping charge, then most likely around $35 USD for customes fee's, then conversion to canadian im paying $265 CDN lol

Well my friend is going to port huron to pick up some stuff he ordered so it gave me the opportunity to order up those D585's from ebay for the same price you americans pay :)

Here are the cheapest prices I could find from ebay:

Seller - Herko (they sell both AC delco D585 and Herko D585 coils)

4x ac delco d585 = $154
6x ac delco d585 = $189
8x ac delco d585 = $255

Even though I only need 4 I went ahead and grabbed the 6 pack, only $35 for the extra two coils I can keep them untill im sure the 4 I use are working perfectly then I can just resell them and make some money :/

just go to your local pick'n pull scrapyard and get the coils for just about nothing.
i went to kenny u-pull & got the coils for 9,75$ cdn each off of a gmc yukon.

ac delco coil have a number stamped on them: 19005218, you can see it even when the coils are rusty.

It's mainly addressed to all the lurker fanbois that think you need uber expensive BHR crap when you can make your own for under 100$, you know, those people who call changing your oil a DIY project...

If you think the BHR kit is uber expensive then you should just stop modding cars and buy a used Pinto.

why spend more money than needed for equal performance?

i payed a couple grand for the car and it's main use is lapping, not a shiny slammed street machine.

i put my money on things like expensive tires & brake pads... u know, stuff that makes you fast!

You are paying for the convenience, customer service, warranty, and a proven and nicely executed product that doesn't use Ebay harnesses and cheap coils. I have installed many many BHR kits locally and all those kits have lasted many years and those that I know of that had problems, had those problems resolved by BHR without a hitch.

Also, Nothing from a junk yard goes on my car so by the time you fab a nice bracket, buy the wires, and buy nice brand name coils you are not saving a shit load. Sure many are qualified and have done it themselves but whether its better or not depends on your view because I have seen a few, and that crap would never fly on my car.

I'm boosted and my BHR kit is coming up on 8 years old, and 40,000 miles of that is boosted. So calling it uber expensive and crap is just silly. But that's your opinion and I am sure it isn't based on anything you have experienced first hand with the BHR kit.

that's up to you, this tread started with a guy asking about coils to fix his bad ones that he thinks aren't genuine and then someone else asks about P/N stamping. All issues which i address in my first post.

can you prove to us that a used ac delco coil is worse than a new one? can you demonstrate with any kind of data that a jegs, msd or other equivalent coil actually makes a difference?


keep in mind, 9.75$ cdn per coil, even got the bracket &hardware for free.


in my field of work, you have to prove your point, not base decisions on feelings & looks. The 3 D's ya know... Data Driven Decisions, the basis of all engineering!

The BHR kit is solid, not necessary but yeah all that extra money you're putting into it is convenience and service. Also the BHR bracket is super clean and Charles is one if the coolest guys in town deal with.

Junk yard parts are cool, but for critically active parts I wouldn't really trust something that's been sitting out for a while when what you need is readily availible new. That's just trashy.

Either way they're not going to beat a stock set without tuning.

don't get hung up on my language, i'm not saying it's total shit, just that for the price i can do better myself since i'm a good fabricator. if i could get the kit for a several hundred bucks I'd do it.

By the way, lotsa scrap yard parts are in top shape or even new & come from crashed cars. were not in the 70's, most cars in the scrap yard are less than 15 yrs old and in relatively good shape, people just want new cars nowadays.

seems i hit a sensitive point here, is it the BHR mention or the reference to fanbois?
