Compression Test Results........
Relax Relax :) Had a minor issue with the car and since there were several other maintenance items that needed doing and Im doing a minor bathroom and laundry room renovation off to the dealer it went.
New plugs, decarb and compression check later(all covered by Mazda - thank you) Rotor 1 750, 710, 740 Rotor 2 770, 750, 760 RPM 266 My surging idle has been back recently and it happened to them while they had it hooked up to the diagnostics. Diagnosed it as a problem with the MAF(crazy fluctuating grams per second readings forcing throttle changes). They switched it with one on hand and it actually did fix it. But they wanted to charge a ridiculous price I wont even print ( but you are welcome to guess) to replace it. I called Paul at Mazmart while I was standing there and he gave me a much better price of $85 shipped. Thanks Paul:) |

For future reference, Autozone stocks the RX-8 MAF for $70.
The part number is 74-50009 |

Hmm. I just picked one up and it was $69 + the core.
Maybe it is regional pricing. In any event, $80 to just walk into a local store and walk out with a MAF is pretty decent. It is a $300 part from Mazda (or Subaru or Toyota, depending on where you want to shop). |
pretty crazy to spend 300 when a reman is only 80
|
Good to hear your engine is doing good. Oh, and how the hell do you reman a MAF sensor?
|
Hardly seems worth while. Only material you'd be saving is a few ounces of plastic...

"Reman" is a way that OE parts manufacturers can put replacement parts in the distribution channel for a significantly lower price than what is listed as "OE" without getting in trouble with the OE.
In other words, it is new, not used, but it isn't an "OE" part (even though it is, usually). Mitsubishi makes the MAF and it is used on a dozen other cars. They will sell that part to "reman" outlets like Delco, A1 Cardone, TechChoice, Dorman, etc., who will than remark it and resell it to outlets like NAPA, Autozone, O'Reilley, BAP, etc. |

Whats "good" compression readings for the 8, I found out that it states compression is 10:1, not sure how the math works out on that though.
|
anything 680 or less on any one rotor or 150 difference between chambers on one rotor or 100 difference between the high in one rotor and the low in the 2nd is bad compression. 700s like mine at that rpm are good.
really id like to be able to look inside this motor and see why that one chamber is only 710. carbon in the seal groove? warping apex seal? |
