Many thanks to all who've contributed to this thread - I've recently picked up an AT 2005 with this code. The information here enabled me to tackle the work. I found the solenoids on Amazon for $22. They were identical to the OEM parts and changing the middle one out eliminated P0661. I removed my UIM (first attempt at doing so) in under an hour with little trouble. Thanks again for all of the great info here!
Ok so I'm sitting in my 8 on the phone and my car just dies. I turn it back on and it starts but is running really rough and doesn't Rev properly. I ran a diagnostic on it and the code P-0661 came up and also a cylinder misfire code. Can anyone help?
I just got an RX8 with this error code p0661 and replace the ssv solenoid. It only took me about an hour to do this since it just requires removing the upper intake manifold and all of the o-rings can be reused. Once the solenoid was working I had to manually move the svv valve to get it unstuck since it hadn't moved for a while. This completely fixed the problem. The mil went away and the car runs like a bat out of hell now!
I got the solenoid for $11 on ebay in fact I replace all three that are stacked next to each other since I had the intake off.

There is no temp sensor on the SSV. That part number is for the position sensor on the SSV actuator arm that the pcm uses to determine if the SSV is open or closed. I did see some website that has it listed as a temp sensor, but that isn’t correct. So maybe you saw that and didn’t know this. That has nothing to due with a P0661 code and likely isn’t the problem.
P0661 is for the intake valve actuator solenoids. The solenoids are turned on/off by the pcm to send vacuum to the intake valve actuator canister to either open it (solenoid on - vacuum is applied to canister and if the valve can rotate freely the vacuum force will open it) or close it (solenoid closed - releases vacuum in canister to atmosphere and if the valve can rotate freely there is a spring inside the canister that will close it).
This was from early in this same thread so you don’t seem to be following the information that was already provided here:
The two most common issues that require repair to correct this are either the solenoid is bad and just needs to be replaced (about $40 maybe) or one of the two the control wires for the wiring harness connector to the solenoid is broken and needs to be repaired. Heat and age sometimes makes these small wires brittle and the connector can be a bit difficult to get out of the solenoid. So occasionally using too much force to remove the connector can damage one of the wires.
The three intake valve solenoids are located on the backside corner of the upper intake manifold. Each solenoid has a color coded wiring harness connector. The connectors are all physically the same so you have to be sure that you connect them in the proper color order. The same is true for the vacuum hoses from the solenoids to the proper device canister except there is no color coding for them. If you get any of these swapped around in the wrong position then the pcm is turning on the wrong device at the wrong time and the engine will have problems.
The three solenoids are positioned vertically in a row.
- the top one has a blue connector and is for the Secondary Air valve (air pump valve)
- the middle one has a white connector and is for the SSV intake valve
- the bottom one has a black connector and is for the VDI intake valve

ive already cleaned my ssv on both ends electrical and mechanical. i also replaced the switch on my valve. I recently ordered 3 solenoids. Waiting for them but would like to be prepared to fix shorts while im installing the new solenoids.
In the service manual, you need it and the electrical wiring diagram if you want to solve these kinds of problems effectively and quickly. I don’t mind helping you or anyone else, but some proper effort from the people needing and asking for help is not much consideration to ask for in return, is it?
I know this is an old thread but the estimate I was quoted by a local (non-Mazda dealer) repair shop to replace the solenoid after my P0661 error code are about 3 times those listed here. Have repair shop and parts prices really gone up this much?
$850 total:
$300 for the solenoid and $550 for labor
I have to pay $200 for the diagnostic if I don't follow through, but they will credit that toward the $850 if I get it done. Affordable Tire and Brake in Portland, Oregon for what it's worth. They always seemed to be the only place who wouldn't flood the engine when I took it in there for repairs so I have been going to them for 18 years before this with reasonable rates. (2004 RX-8)
I replaced it myself for 12 bucks. Here's a YouTube video that shows how and the solenoid on amazon. If you're not mechanically inclined then maybe you have a friend that can do it.
This is not common because most 8’s had a recall fix for the milky residue on the oil dipstick that replaced these solenoids already and it appears that the replacement ones are of better quality. I have read the sticky and all the other posts that come up when you search regarding the RX-8 code p0661, which will give you a CEL. None of them gave me direction and location enough to fix it myself. That’s not to say their not out there, just that I didn’t find them. So I am writing this as a way to help the next guy and spare them the hassle and BS I dealt with.
Code ‘P-0661 Intake Manifold Tuning Valve Control Low’ will usually have a 'Bank 1a' or something after it. I was originally informed that ‘Bank 1a’ referrers to the #1 rotor. Later in this thread I learned that is not true so I have edited this first post with the updated info. P0661 refers to the solenoids, but they are not rotor specific. the banks are solenoid specific. One is for your SSV, one is for your VDI, and one is for your air pump. It will make a difference in the part you work on since there are three of solenoids, all right next to each other. The code is for a valve solenoids on the intake manifold. They are not easy to get to but if you are mechanically inclined then you should have no problem. You will need to disconnect the throttle body and remove the extension manifold. This will give you access to the three valve solenoids.
From what I have learned it's a dealer item (KL01-18-741) and cost about $100. If you can find it cheaper post it here for others. The three solenoids are color coated Blue, White and Black. The mechanic at my dealer stated that the valve solenoid that corresponds with ‘P-0661 Intake Manifold Tuning Valve Control Low Bank 1a’ is the White one. But he is also the one who told me that the banks were rotor specific so don’t take anything for granted. I hope this helps
