Clutch partially engaged when pedal fully depressed?

Hi All, I've found what might be a problem when I was trying to diagnose something else. Here's the story:

I get a rough buzzing sound at high rpm under load... I figured this was just vibration and not pinging but i wanted to test. So, I was reving slowly at a stop to see if I heard the same sound I did when accellerating. My clutch pedal was fully in, but the car was in first gear. After listening and not hearing the sound I noticed some clutch burny smell. AFAIK when you have a clutch depressed, there should be NO contact with the flywheel right? So there should be no reason I smelled a clutchy smell. Any ideas on this?

from what I've read in the forum, the sound isn't pinging... but I'm not entirely sure. I've only heard pinging in other cars at low RPM. It was wierd that I only hear it under load. Also, it doesn't seem to lose power. Anyone that has heard the high-rpm ping that can advise me on this?

I'll try to describe the sound:
free-revving: vrrrroooooooooooooooooooooooooommmmmm (very smooth)
under load: vrrrrrrooooooooooooooooooooozozozozozozmm (buzz sometimes starts at 6500, almost always hear it kick in at about 7500 and continues till red line).

Thanks for any help in advance... I'm kinda worried about my baby and definately want to make sure she'll be ready for the track/autox course in the spring

Hmmm, could be another case of the loose flywheel. If the flywheel was lose and rubbing the clutch, it could cause a problem. Are you sure it's coming from the drivetrain and not possibly the heat shield on the muffler? Just curious. I had a different buzzing sound than most describe as well. Mine started once at about 5k, then go away and come back if I ever hit 7k. Did I give any help?

Also, I could be wrong, but if your clutch was rubbing you should feel a little more resistance trying to get into first gear.

 Wow... maybe I've just lost it, but I've been here a while and haven't ever heard of SDAIS.

slims he's talkign abotu the Sequential Dynamic Air Intake System. basicall the intake manifold has various paths that open at different rpms to allow for more/better flow as the rpms go higher. as the paths open there is certain noises that can be considered buzzing that are completely normal and some of these paths open at teh rpms the OP is posting.

Oh, ok... I guess that could have been my problem too. I wasn't ever too concerned with it. Thanks Zoom.

Ok I'm definately sure its not pinging... the sound is metallic and rattly and seems to coincide with SDAIS.

As to the clutch, I'm not so sure its ok. Sometimes i have a pause going into first... very rarely it seems like the car does a little lurch when shifting into first as well. I'm going to try the clutch-in tranny-in-first revving again, probably tomorrow, to make sure it wasn't a coincedence and I was smelling someone elses clutch. I'll let you all know how it turns out.... I might be visiting the dealer before holiday vacation

fizzer, apparently there are a lot of people having trouble with the clutch and tranny, myself included. i have requested other members to post experiences and many already have, https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=47761. my dealer won't do anything for me so i am gathering up these statements to help with my arguement. i only have 7,000 miles on my car and it will barely go now. print out all these complaints if your dealer gives you grief about fixing it under warranty
