Clicking on start up.

Recently I have noticed a very loud clicking apon start up. The temperatures are starting to drop around here (30-40 at night), and it only happens in the morning. After warming up for about 5 minutes, it will go away and not come again until the following morning. I recently changed my oil and I am running 5w20 dino, but the clicking sound was there before I did the oil change. Does anyone have a clue what this could be. Did I provide enough info, or does anyone with knowledge need more?

have you had all recalls done? what year is it? clicking like electronic or like mechanical?

Mazurfer 11-09-2007 06:00 PM

Don't worry about it, there are "According to the Technical Highlights CD", several solenoids and valves that perform a self-test when the ignition is first turned on.
It is probably nothing more than that and as the car heats up it will open and close some things as well. It may be a little louder as the weather is cooler.

2004, all recalls done, mechanical clicking. Thanks maz, makes me feel a little better. I just hate having my car clicking at me quite loudly, it's like it is trying to tell me something.

Should be no issue........if I think of something otherwise, I'll let you know, but wouldn't worry.

Probably purge solenoid.

I've started hearing the same thing myself after I hit 20,000 miles. I don't think it's normal at all, when the engine first starts up and is idling at 2000 RPMs, I hear this ticking noise that is coming from the engine rotors, as though something were stuck on a sidewall and the rotor's side seals were brushing past it (not that there is, but it's what I can imagine from the sound). It slowly fades away back to the normal purring that you normally only hear from the engine once the start up note turns over, and the engine starts to idle at its normal range. It's a pretty nasty ticking sound, and even my friends that heard it said it definitely didn't sound like how the rotary normally sounds at idle.

rx8speeddmon 11-12-2007 10:09 AM

That is exactly what it sounds like. I even went through the engine to check and make sure nothing was clicking against the belts.

mine seems to have a clicking noise also, sounds similar in fashion to what yours does, mine only has 11000 mines on it atm, and is a 2006 manual. i noticed it only about 700 - 1k miles ago, and it doesn't seem to go away too much, mine stays a constant, but i don't hear it as much after it was up, but when i'm idling i can hear it. It's definitely not a normal sound that it should be making in any means. If you have found any new information on this please let me know, as i'm almost due for another oil change i might just take it back to the mazda dealer and have them check it out since there are a few other issues that they need to fix.

rx8speeddmon 11-14-2007 10:12 AM

I thought about taking it in, but there is really nothing wrong as far as the way the car is running. Besides, I would have to take it there and leave it overnight because it only does it on start up. By the time I got to the dealer the click would be gone. I figure my next oil change I will take it there and have them do a full check on it. I try to do that every 3rd or 4th change so that in case I missed an recall or something it will get caught by them.

check your sparkplug wire connections both at the coils and at the sparkplugs, it's been a common problem for one not to be on all the way and the clicking noise is the spark jumping a gap, usually it's at the sparkplugs so try there first

New2u 11-15-2007 01:42 PM

well i had taken mine in alittle earlier then i thought because i had a nail in my back right tire, and i figured i might as well just take it to the dealership and kill about 4 birds with 1 stone. They told me that at least with my clicking noise, which may not be the same as yours, it was normal for the small clicking noise mine was making. (Not sure if he was lieing or not, but if so .... still 4 more year on the warranty) and they got my nail out... woot.

zoom44 11-15-2007 01:55 PM

and did he explain the cause of the clicking beyond "normal" so that you could tell us the source of your click

Razz1 11-15-2007 04:33 PM

Is it possible they are describing the air pump for the cat?

TeamRX8 11-16-2007 02:29 AM

If you ask why they're bending you over and giving it to you dry in the keester they'll tell you that's normal too ...
