Cel #p0506
About 2 weeks ago a CEL popped up. With Jedi54 recently purchased software we diagnosed the 8 with CEL #P0506 (below normal idle speed). The CEL would go on and off and I couldn't identify a pattern.
A week after (car was running fine so I didn't see an immediate need to drop it off at the dealer) the diagnosis I had the dealer look at it. They said that they couldn't properly diagnose the vehicle due to the aftermarket intake (Racing Beat with ram air duct) and that I would need to reinstall the stock to properly identify the cause of this CEL however, they did pull up the code which matched what Jedi54 had on his software. Well I decided to do some research and discovered the following causes that may have triggered CEL #P0506 1) MAF 2) IAC 3) Intake Leak 4) Exhaust Resistriction I decided to tackle the MAF being that it's simple and probably needs it. I purchased some CRC MAF cleaner at my local auto parts store and cleaned the IAT and MAF resistors. So far the CEL hasn't reared it's ugly head. I'll keep you informed. See MAF pics below. Thats some *freaking* dirty IAT sensor !!!!!!!!!
wow .... this is actually the first time Im seeing such dirty sensor :) I havent clean mine for couple K miles but still clean (no dirty that I can see). |
I know you'd mentioned you usually got the CEL in the mornings, any luck this morning?

Take your accordion hose/intake duct off and try cleaning the TB. If the MAF was that dirty how about the TB?

I think you should check your air filteration. There is NO WAY it could be that dirty. Unless you havent clean it for the life of your car.

we cleaned Newcastle's Ram Air intake about 6-7 months ago. Maybe ALL the ashes during the recent fires in CA messed things up a bit

well I'll tell u this much my MAF sensor was also as dirty as his, and I cleaned it and now the problem seems to be better too

Do not take it to the dealer. Just disconnect the battery for a few minutes and rest the PCM.
Re-tighten the MAF tube and all connections. Check that Red plug under the throttle body. It may be causing an air leak. They have een known to get loose. Most likey that's the problem. Use silcone to secure it on. |
Pretty sure the brown node that you see in the first 2 pics is not the MAF Sensor, but the intake temp sensor. IIRC, the MAF sensor is the wire section you show in the 3rd pic. It didn't look too bad in that pic.

we need to clear your CEL again to make sure we can properly troubleshoot this.

Update: I cleaned the throttle body and air filter (it did have a thick black ring encompassing the butterfly valve which was a PITA to clean). Unfortunatly it didn't fix the CEL. I'll be removing the RB and installing the stock intake so the dealer will correct the issue. I'll keep you folks updated.

good luck with the dealership! Hopefully with the stock intake going back in they'll have no more excuses and will actually fix this

Update: Dealer said I had a bad TB. Got a new TB under warranty however, the they said that the RB CAI may have generated the problem. If this problem were to occur again with the RB then they will not cover it under warranty. Personally i'm perplexed as to how the RB CAI can cause TB failure. In order to mitigate future headaches/pissing matches I have decided to simply install the stock intake. Car idles much smoother and runs great now.

There's NO way the RB CAI damaged your TB. |
