Catalytic Converter - options???
 

Hi all,

I have a 2004 RX-8 and somehow my ignition coils cracked, burned out, and also caused the catalytic converter to toast... I've replaced the coils plus spark plugs, and am now looking at options for the catcon - any advice on how to keep the costs down, as it feels like the damn dealer has me by the balls...again - to the tune of ~$,2400...!

rx7.com sells the RP Highflow. That has worked well for some.

Do you have any idea as to whether or not this catcon would be legal in Canada? It's a quarter of the price the one the dealer is trying to sell me...!

There's a recent thread pointing to a cat at Rock Auto for around $270 US. Worth checking it out, and asking them if it's legal in Canada.

A $270 cat for a rotary sounds almost too good to be true, which generally means it is. :(

I'm in the market for a replacement cat as well. From what I've been able to find here, we burn through the cheap ones in no time and the Mazda OEM cat is rediculously expensive.

At this point, I'm leaning toward either the RP Supercat or the Black Halo Racing referenced above (with catalyst). If anyone has actually used either one of these I would love to hear about it. :)

Lots of people have I'm sure. Just a quick less than 10 seconds google search found me a whole lot of results on this forum. Just use "site:www.rx8club.com bhr midpipe cat" without the quotes, and change the search to whatever you want.

use cat* as your search term (you do understand the significance of using the * asterisk symbol, right?)

select to search titles only

select to search specifically in the Aftermarket Performance forum (this is not a Tech Garage issue)

the Davesport is ok for general NA street use, but for racing, track, or FI you will want to spend the money on an HJS cat ( use HJS* as your search term), but you have to pay to play. I have many race seasons without any problem.

Yes I know some of the little tricks to searching the forum, but when you use google the results are generally better. You can get decent results from the forum but only if you do it as you said and search titles.

I would say what the asterisk does but that wouldn't prove I knew it.

not trying to sell anything here, but the silly davesport cat has served me well. it went from 89k miles to 119k miles with no issues.. and for the last 1k miles the car has just been drive to the track, track drive home.. install car cover.. about 2 years worth of that now. btw, put a bore scope down the front side. still looks good.

so with all you have tested stuff, charts, search this. how do you post this stuff?

btw, HJS is sold in america now? if so is it less than 600 bucks?

The Davesport has been hit and miss. A number of people have issues with it, the same issues HJS details on its website explaning the differences with their design and low cost products.

You have been gone for quite a while and have missed a lot. Maybe there are manufacturing issues or a bad batch got out. Your experience isn't the only one and you're clearly not up to speed on other experiences. Not everyone had a bad experience with the RP Supercat either. Since I'm aware of those experiences how else would you expect me to post?

Hey Team ... as an FYI you might be interested in.

I'm going to be trying a Davesport cat this April in Ontario, where the emission laws require a sniff test.
The Davesport Cat has actually been installed in to a RP Supercat that failed the Ontario Emission test after only a year of (and no Winter mileage) being on the car!
All this is has been and will be done on my car.
Darkbrew actually found someone in the city to do the fabrication and welding of the Davesport cat to the RP pipe.

I'm not expecting a pass on emissions but it will be interesting none the less

if this is going to be a constructive thread.. some answers. i do not get a cel for the cat.. my cat placement is not the norm..

i do get flames on the track often, with photos and i think some video.. but it still runs strong.. i did a bore scope look at the front of it 9 months ago and it was fine.. but the car has had a cover on it since then...

i will say in fla usa, we dont have sniff or anything at all.. i would say 50/50 on the sniff test, but if it does not set of the o2 sensor i would think it would be good to go..

as i have been gone and missed a lot.. i know RP put them out.. that is kinda what i recall before i went on hiatus..

i know that ray called and asked me about my install of the davesport and who did the first one..

but i dont know if the cocktail shaker ever made it to the usa.. billy boat was listed as and importer back then and when i called them, my i did not speak the right language..

as in they had no idea what i was taking about..

so does the hjs cat exist in the usa?

btw, i am struggling with your knowledge vs fighting with everyone helping here. as i was befuddled by you motor offer before i went on time out.. hope that makes sense. i think the page you are on and the one that i was on might be the same.

just had another RX8 autocrosser email me a pic of their now failing Davesport cat, it's telescoping out due to it's crappy single-winding design

perhaps this is a question for the stupid question thread but since you bring it up here and I have your attention now, what is the significance of the * ? I don't know what you're talking about

The "*" (asterisk) is what's known as a "wild card" which basically means it represents "anything else". So entering the search term as "cat*" would return hits such as...

cat
catalytic
cats
catacomb
catastrophic

..you get the point. If you search for "cat" by itself you'll miss things, but by adding the wildcard you'll get cat, catalytic (which you want) and also any other odd way someone might have misspelled the word catalytic.

Hope that helps. Google makes it so easy to search these days people forget (or never knew) things like this. I remember when Carnegie Mellon University had the KILLER search engine on the net and if you didn't use wildcards and logical "and", "or" etc... you didn't find anything. Boolean searches FTW. lol

Also if you do "site:www.rx8club.com topic" instead of "site:rx8club.com topic" you wont get those mobile results, it will all be regular pages.

Yes the only way to search on the forums properly is to use the boolean searches. http://www.internettutorials.net/boolean.asp

For those that have to pass emissions and dont want a CEL, I found that Magnaflow makes a direct-fit replacement. http://www.magnaflow.com/02catalytic...ayproducts.asp

Most auto parts stores should be able to order the 49 State one for under $350. I have seen it listed on some sites for around $250 though.

Same happened to me on my '04 Model. Number 1 Coil went bad, but I was turning on my street when it happened, so I lucked out and didnt burn the Cat or O2 sensor up. But they are on the list to swap out soon.
