Replace the cat with something that's legal and will pass emission inspection.

www.davesport.com/cgi-bin/davesport/DCAT100.html

This is the setup Im switching to to get rid of the CEL since Im missing the accessport train.

You will need to get it welded by a local muffler shop. THis is a cheap solution that supposedly provides the same gains as a midpipe while avoiding the CEL

Don't forget that you can take it to the dealer and get it replaced under warranty if you're under 80K.

If not, I'd go with the davesport mentioned.

The dealer will only touch it if it triggers a CEL or fails an E-test

Depends on your states emissions, in Illinois they just do an OBDII test, meaning as long as there's no CEL on, you'll pass. If your state does the tailpipe test, to actually see what pollutants are coming out, then Im not 100%

Emissions is a concern for the OP, a cat delete would not be an option in this case

I agree with you, that way you have the stock cat, even if you want to do a midpipe or high flow, its nice to have the OEM cat in your garage for a rainy day. However, for some reason his dealer doesnt seem to want to warranty it, which is BS if he's under 80K miles.

There's more to the OBDII test than "No CEL." They check to make sure the car has been through some number of drive cycles without having been cleared. I think there's also some data stored. Essentially they're using the car's sensors instead of sticking the gizmo up the tailpipe.

This is correct, I forgot to mention that, thank you for correcting. I learned the hardway when I tried to be a smartass and clear my CEL in the parking lot with a dashhawk

Speaking of which, I need to go back and get that handled now that my cat is back on

Crime does not pay. Especially when you leave evidence.

In Virginia if the OBDII data dump does not show valid data, then they put the car on the dyno and stick the gizmo up the exhaust. IMHO they should have a lower inspection fee if they can just do OBDII, but it's still $28 no matter what. I've been tempted to clear my system before emission testing just so they'll have to work to earn their money.

They need to provide you with documentation as to how your fender bender caused your cat converter to fail.

While you're at the dealership waiting for them to get out of the managers office as they discuss what BS theyre going to say to you to get you to leave, Get Mazda on the phone and talk to them right in front of the service team.

See how quick their tune changes.

They cannot deny your warranty claim if they have no proof/documentation that the accident caused cat failure.

By the way, how do they even know about the accident? is there still damage on the car?

Didnt you mention you had modifications done to your car, are you sure they're not denying you because of that? Because that would make more sense....

voiding your emissions warranty due to a collision is bullshit. Unless they can prove that the collision CAUSED the cat failure, they cannot void your warranty, it is actually a law.

But if you already got a high flow cat than congrats, just know that they shouldnt have done that and I would personally never go back to that dealership.
