Castrol Magnatec or Mobil for Rx8
 
Hi guys

got the 2004 Rx8 46,000 km, switched to castrol maganatec 10W-40. In sri Lanka temp range-28C-35C. or shall i use mobile 15W-40 mineral. Pls advice. Thanks a million

castrol gtx 5W-20 is not available here and the mechanics told me since their is no winter in sri lanka 5w is not avialable.

no offense here but it's just pure stupid to use 5w20 for Renesis (or any Rotary engine) other than you want to squeeze that last 5% of mpg out of it.

it will work of course, you can even use 0w10 from Mobil, but is it a good thing to do? take a guess.

Use the 15w40 one, the closer the viscosity, the less "extra additive" it has, meaning less crap to wear out = more stable oil.

Even better , just use 20w50. Cuz your location will NEVER see snow or any temp close to it. (unless its the end of the world :))

^^Agree, where I live, its the same temperature range, been using 20w-50 since day 1. Just make sure to do oil change every 5000 km and you will be fine for normal daily driving with once in a while redline.

pretty funny when you say its stupid to run 5W20 as if the main problem with most of the rotary failures are apex seals not sealing properly due to carbon build up coming off scratching the housing. a clean burn is much more important than wear protection. you go figure.

even more funny is that you think 5w20 "burns cleaner" than say, 7w13423414 :rollingla :yelrotflm

not to mention, MOST of the junk you see in the engine came from the gasoline you pump every few days.

Just because gasoline looks "golden pure" doesn't mean its really pure.

Do you know what will happen when your bearing is "out of spec" ? take another good guess.

if the junk inside the engine is from the gas, why some engines lasted 100k and some lasted 20k as if the deposit should be JUST from gas not oil.

Im running my 09 on 5w20, see how many engines I will be replacing according to your "theory".

I don't need to. I already know what will happen.

the only major difference is the 3rd injection port. which cover 3 points, both sides and center.

your apex seal will have more "even" wear because of it.

people premixing early will see the same effect.

but one thing to remember is that your bearing has not been changed, and we're using the same exact bearing since 12A. and that area needs a lot of love ... I mean lube to keep it from premature wear.

that you have to ask wtf Mazda is doing at their factory.

Mazda "loosen" up the spec @ a lot of areas, Just read some spec of the MSP, compare it to say REW or DESI or whatever. u'll know what I mean.

Worst is that ... some of the seals inside these engines are "out of spec" from factory. they use pre-cut seals at factory to speed things up. I mean the engine will work. but for how long? good luck !

Do a compression test hmm say when you reach 50K miles, it should tell you if you're one of the lucky ones or the "oh no" ones. I belong to the "oh no" group. :(

Custom re-build engines last much longer (most of the time, assume the person use a lot of brand new parts, or with completely new parts) will last longer than engines from Mazda. cuz in the US you can't buy pre-cut seals, all seals are a little long and you have to grind them down to the spec you like.

Im planning to do a complete brand new engine for my FC, already got the whole list of stuff that I need to buy , saved on Mazda's web site. The FC I have now has a Rebuild engine that the previous owner said the "previous" owner b4 him put in, has about 35K miles. sure it still works,but everytime I start it up it smokes like my car is on fire. garbage rebuild I would say.

What you're using will work fine. Don't worry about it.

Ditto. They're both fine. For that temperature range, almost any oil that a sane person would consider is OK. If I lived in your climate, my preference would be either of those two..as long as neither was synthetic.

I would use the Mobile One because it is heavier and lubricates better.

hey guys,

Changed the oil from from castrol magnatec 15w-40 to Castrol GTX 20W-50. The cilmatic conditions around here is 30c degrees. had a major improvement. regained the power which was lost. engine runs and sounds smoother. this is the oil grade to be used for hot climates.

Going back to the original post 10 weight is fine. If it's THAT COLD don't be driving a sports car.
