Can't get my oil filter off

Ok, this is f'ing rediculous, I'm trying to change my oil for the first time, I have all the tools per the DIY, and I can't get the damn oil filter off b/c its torqued on so f'ing tight. I actually broke the F type filter cap wrench trying to get it off (I know I'm turning the right direction I checked several times)

So how is this for funny, I'm buying 4qrts of oil to put back in the car, I'm driving to my dealer to have them do an oil change to loosen my filter, and then I'm coming back and putting in my royal purple....

tell me thats not messed up.

I know what you mean brillo. Many have said that Mazda might have hired the world strongest japanese to tighten our filters. Like you, I was like: "Oh crap, this thing is freakin not gonna open". It kept on slipping out. But somehow, I got it to "grip" and just a light turn it opened (I started to hear the chorus: "Hallelujah"). The trick is to not align it so it fits, but make it unaligned and thats where the "grip" is. After I removed the filter, I was unable to get the wrench out. I had to hammer it out (thats how I realized how it opened). Kinda confusing, but thats how mine came off and will not have to worry about doing that again.

They will put your royal purple in for you... kill 2 birds with one stone... don't forget to tell them not to over-tighten it.

Don't forget.....

Don't forget that your 4 jugs of RP will be mixing with the 3+ quarts of black used oil in the pump/coolers/lines. You would only have about 60% RP!

The coolers and rotors hold a lot of oil, the total capacity is almost 8 quarts.....

I would let the dealership change the oil, come home and change it again yourself with 5W20, run it for a while, don't bother with the filter,THEN put your RP in!

That way, at least you have about 95% CLEAN oil, with 60% of it being the new synthetic...then NEXT time you change it, it will be mostly RP.

A bit 'anal' ;) to flush it out like that, but that's what I did....

Ah yes, that is why we suggest cracking the filter before draining. :DWhere did the filter wrench break? Did the drive slot get rounded? I've had that happen before with the polymer wrenches. I have one now that is polymer, but has a metal insert for the drive slot. Did you try using saran-wrap?

I broke a socket type filter wrench on mine, but I've found something else that does the job nicely. Your local auto parts store should have a three pronged adjustable filter wrench. I got mine at Advance Auto Parts. The teeth grip harder as you turn your ratchet. I've got nearly 15K miles on my RX-8 now and have changed the oil 4 times so far. Works like a charm.
