A/C compressor cycles?

It seems that my A/C compressor likes to cycle on and off. The air temperature feels normal but my compressor did not used to cycle on and off. Is there a reason for this new phenomenon? Also, is it normal to be able to hear the compressor clutch "click" on and off from inside the car(at idle with all windows closed)?

The Compressor cycles a lot or the Fans do?

It is normal for the fans to cycle a lot (kind of annoying, but it's what they do), but the compressor should cycle less often, normally turning off every once in a while defrost (to keep from freezing up.)

It's the compressor. I can see the compressor start and stop spinning. The clutch will engage for maybe a few seconds and then kick out. Also, it seems that the "click" it makes when engaging is pretty loud.

Normal - it only seems different because you are now paying attention ....

LoL, that could be it. But seriously. I've never heard it click on and off so frequently. I've never seen a compressor kick in for only a few seconds and then turn off.

My 04 does and always has done that. The only other cars I have ever heard click that loud were my Dad's Chryslers.

Thanks, swoope.

Looks like either it's already been programmed (unlikely) or I don't have the new A/C amplifier (most likely). My 8 is a 2004 6-spd and I've never taken it in for a "weak A/C."

Mine is a 2004 (january build), and the reprogramming trick made all of the difference to my AC performance. It also did extend the cycle time so it doesn't cut out so frequently. Double check the procedure, and maybe start by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. The first time I tried it it didn't work, but I was holding down the wrong buttons!

As for the sound -- yes it's noticeable but I think that is normal. The car idles quietly, making it easy to hear the AC clutch engage.
