Buttery dipstick

Don't laugh, that's what I saw. :)

When I pulled the dipstick on my 8 several weeks ago, it was covered in what I can only describe as big globs of buttery stuff. I wiped it off and it hasn't come back since. The dealer has no idea what it might have been.

Has anybody else seen this? Any ideas what it might be?

This is common, the stickies have a lot of good info for new owners... But if your dealer has never heard of it, I would definitely find another one.

wow nice title. Anyway there is a tsb for this. its fine. "On some vehicles, during engine oil level check, the customer may find a milky substance sticking to the oil level gauge. When you encounter a customer complaint for this concern, explain to the customer that this milky substance does not affect engine performance or any other functions of the vehicle"

It's a coincidence in my case; I just bought the car. :)

Thanks for the above links. Some of the descriptions reflect my own experience. I take very short trips (my commute is 1mi) and I haven't seen the stuff since it was relatively cold outside.

Not much of an option for me - they're the only game in town.

I tend to do most of my own work myself anyway. I rebuild my own engines, for example, but they tend to have pistons. My RX-8 is under a 90-day warranty from the out-of-state dealer I bought it from, and I wanted to take it to the local dealer to have them look it over. If it was a Subaru or a Toyota, I would know more about the car and wouldn't worry. This car is very...foreign to me.

The dealer talked me into paying for a 'fuel system service.' It's probably BS, but then they did the 'multi-point inspection' for free so I'm happy to throw them a few bucks for my peace of mind.

Hope you enjoy your RX-8. Short trips are hard on any car -- take the long way home once in awhile! :)

You know you're an RX-8 owner when... you play with your dipstick too much and wonder if the milky substance is normal!
