burnt clutch and high rpms
 

theres a problem with my car and this is what i am noticing.

I turn the car the on and try to back up and its hitting 4 rpms goin 5 mph.

i put it in first and start to roll forward, shoots to 4 1/2 rpms and going 5 mph. The slightest touch to the accelerator the rpms shoot all the way to 7 and im moving about 15 mph still in first.

The car will calm down and fall to 4 1/2 rpms when i let off the acclerator (and im not pushing it in all the way, im probably pushing it 1/4 - 1/6 of an inch and it shoots up). I'll switch to second and the rpms will fall down and go back up to 4. Same when i go to 2nd to 3rd. 3rd to 4th. etc.

I try switching from 1st to 6th and when i do im going 20-25 mph and the rpms will be at 4 1/2 - 5 in 6th gear.

during all this i smell my clutch burning and i know im not doing it. Im not giving it a lot of gas enough to burn it, but somehow it is.

i got 10,146 miles on it, got the oil changed at 1,000 miles. Got a K&N intake and Borla exhaust.

Do you think the intake or exhaust have anything to do with this? or the oil needs to be changed? or I f***ked up my clutch somehow and i need to get a new one? I quit driving it for now until i take it to get it looked at in the mornin. Im very upset and i just want my baby to be okay :).

Your clutch is toast and the intake/exhaust didn't have anything to do with it. The only thing to do is bring it in to have it replaced. Seeing that you are under 12k miles it should be covered under warranty as long as there are no signs of abuse.

warranty takes care of clutches? And if it doesnt how much is a new one? like 2000.

Wow, I would be interested to hear the result to this one. Is everyone having some kind of clutch issue? I have burnt a clutch before, but in 10,000 miles? I guess a hydrolic failure is not very likely, but possible. I for sure wouldn't continue to rev it up in 6th gear. If you thing about it, you are turning the plate at the same speed as you would be at 80 mph's, but only doing 15... therefore, you are for sure burning the clutch. You might want to get it checked out ASAP. Also, this could be very expensive. If it's not covered, which I don't think a "burnt" clutch is, it could cost around $3000. Let me know what happens.

wow i change my oil every 3000miles...but yes your clutch is gone baby gone. If you haven't damaged anythign else running your car with a none-exsitant clutch..it is going to cost you but no where near $3k. I'd say 400 for install (you have to drop the tranny and dealerships are quoting around 400 for that)..then you have to buy the clutch which isn't all that expensive (maybe $250-$350) b/c we don't have a double or triple carbon racing clutch or anything. While i was at it i'd put in a slightly stronger clutch and a light weight flywheel at the same time (you need to drop the tranny fo rboth so why not kill 2 birds with one stone).

on a side note at least our clutch isn't as weak as the evo VIII's. I love the evo but my friend had to replace his clutch after 2200 miles...ouch. haha and it is a lot more labor to put in an evo clutch. A kick A$$ tech can do it in 4 hours if he pushes himself to the limit (normaly it can take 5 1/2 - 7 hours). so the labor kills them. LOL our labor is quoted by the dealer at 4 hours.....but it really only takes about 2 - 2 1/2..

Army, yes...but no... I have been doing some shopping myself for clutches. First, Crosswound was charged over $700 for the labor on his clutch. Second, There is a Twin Disk Carbon Clutch located at http://turborx8.com/rx8clutch.htm . I don't exactly agree with the fact that our clutch is stronger than the evo VIII's either. My clutch "shattered" less than 500 miles after getting a new one. Sorry to be so negative about the clutch experiences, but I've just had a real hard time.

WOW sorry to hear that, glad i havent' had any problems with my drivetrain *knocking on wood* and i've gone 25,000 miles so far :D hehe so hears to anouther 25k.

Well good luck to you, and everyone else. Maybe I'm just having the majority of the bad luck for everyone.?.? Oh well, It'll all come out in the wash.

thats exactly what my 8 was doing before the clutch went so most likely its your clutch.

Don't jump to the conclusion that your clutch is toast, although it very well may be. This could definitely be caused by a problem with the hydraulic system. In fact, this same thing happened with my 3000GT on two separate occasions and it was related to the hydraulic line. What could be happening is that even with your foot completely off the clutch pedal, there is not sufficient pressure holding the clutch disk to the flywheel. This will cause slipping during even light throttle applications, and you will smell burning clutch. This could very well be due to air in the hydraulic line, or improper adjustment of the clutch pedal free travel. Have you had any clutch work done recently, or tried to make adjustments yourself? It is very important that you not drive the car in this condition if at all possible, because assuming your clutch is not yet burnt out, it will very quickly become so under the slipping conditions.
