brake rotor stuck...
 

EDIT: ok, so I finally successfully installed my rotors,

ok, here are some few tips to deal with stuck rotors,

1. if you want to keep the ones you are taking out, don't bang it
2. I have found a nice and easy way to take out our stuck rotors

- our rotors come with 5 holes for the wheel lug
- our rotors come with 2 smaller philip screws and 2 more holes to screw the screws into the wheel hub
- our rotors also come with 1 last smallest hole which does not seem to go into.......anything

^ the last one is the hole you use to eject the frozen rotor
use one of the philip screws which was provided to you courtesy of OEM mazda parts global
put that screw where the last smallest hole is, and drill it into the hole, in doing so, your screw will become stuck since there is no way to go through solid steel,

^ at this point if you are using a conventional philip screw driver, you are obviously.....stuck, what you need to do is get the wrench with a philip screw head (very broad ones, don't get sharpy edges since you will destroy your philip screw) and turn it INTO the wheel hub, this will eject your stuck rotor out, about 5 turns should do it (you will hear a *clank* then another *clank*, you can stop at the second clank) remove the philip screw driver from the hole because you will need it to secure your new rotors, and then you can take out your once stuck rotor, take a look at the back, and you'll see either a shitload of dust or rust......

Nope, it's just stuck on there. If you have the two screws out(I had to use an impact driver), then it's just a matter of carefully banging it off of there. Ya need to be careful here, but if you have a rubber mallet, then just go for it, but watch what you hit! Do a search also as I seem to remember that there was a thread with some good ideas about how to break them loose.

i used a wooden block and a big hammer. Put wood to the rotor, then bang on the wood till the rotor comes off. And I don't mean gentle hits either.

I searched my ass off on this one to try and do it yesterday but to no avail
so basically your saying, just bang the shit out of it from the back side until it comes loose? or the front side, or do I just remove the entire wheel hub

i banged on the front. Just rotate the position that you're hitting, go around in circles till it comes off.

at least the rotors are golden, cutee lol

and just a side tract note also, do I do exactly the same thing for the back rotors to change the pads and the rotor? or is there something different, also pics pls >.<

Do the rotors have threaded holes in them? My 8 is too new for me to have messed with brakes, but a lot of rotors have threaded holes at about the same radius as those infernal screws. You screw the right size bolts into those, tightening them so they act as a puller to unstick a stuck rotor.

Good to know the extraction holes are the same thread as the infernal retaining screws. That's one less thing to panic over. And an incentive to get at least one of those screws out intact.

or just pull the retaining screws out and don't worry about it.

sorry to resurrect this :mchase: but... I'm currently trying to pull the rotor off and I have had 0 luck so far.

One issue is that I can't seem to locate the 2 phillips head screws that need to come out. I've found the empty 6mm (not exactly hard) but the other 2 screws seem non existent. Are they on the front and rear? are they hidden? did the guy that owned this 8 before me install some weird one-piece rotor that should never have been put on an 8 and is now impossible to get off the hub?


Edit: I've only looked at the rears so far which might not have these screws, but still doesn't explain why i can't get the rotor off

The screws are only on the front rotors.

The rotor is likely fused to the hub.
I use a wooden block and mallet and hit all around the rotor until it breaks free.

Try some PB blaster too before tapping. Wipe it off after it comes off.

A "shot filled" mallet works wonders too.

I, too, am fighting a stuck rear rotor. I am quite aware of the hole into which you screw a bolt to pop off the rotor. That's how I got the first three rotors off. Unfortunately the bolt I was using decided to shear off on its fourth use, flush with the rotor surface.

So, now I'm stuck with banging it off somehow. I blasted it with PB blaster and banged on it a bit with a sledgehammer.

I guess my question is: how hard can I bang on it? The rotor is headed to the recycler so I'm not worried about damaging it, but I am concerned about damaging the car.

An advice is appreciated.

Small sledge :).....

You don't want to dimple you hub bearings....so be a bit careful.....

Another thing that works is a bit of heat....use a torch and warm it up....

And this thread was the first one that popped up in a title only search for rotor, have been recently resuscitated.

There really needs to be a DIY for the rotors, it looks so simple but then Murphy's law kicks in. I wish I had a camera to put one together. I've hit every difficulty known to man.

Started with the rears, they were stuck. Using the screw got one out had to bang the other.

Moved to the front one retaining screw was already out I ended up stripping the other. Used an air hammer to try to push the edges of the head in (saw it on some youtube diy) just ended up mashing the screw head into the rotor. Had to drill the screw out, then the bolt sheared and I ended up banging the rotor off.

Currently working on the retaining screws on the other side. Neither wants to come off, I'm losing faith in my impact driver very quickly.
