Bought car with "blown engine" turned out to be coils!
I had resigned to getting a short block after getting dissapointing compression results of around 45-50 psi. Of course after reading some tech info I realised that those numbers weren't that low at my cranking RPM of 133 according to my data logger!
So since I had 6 even compression pulses, I decided to take a gamble that the compression test just wasn't accurate. I grab my trusty timing light and hook it up one coil at a time. Only the 2nd trailing coil was firing at all! So I rush down to O'Reily's, pick up all 4 coils, 2x BUR9EQ and 2x BUR7EQ plugs. Throw it all in and VIOLA .. car comes to life smooth as silk. I'm grinning ear to ear over this, went out and beat on it a little to celebrate. Check engine light went off finally on it's own so off to emissions testing on monday! Just wanted to say THANK YOU to the forum because if it wasn't for the wealth of information that is easy to find with a quick search on this forum I don't think it would have been this easy. |
That's awesome man!!

Outstanding! So, tell us. How much did you buy this car with the-so-called blown engine?
|
Good Job, I'll bet you got the car for a awesome price too.
|
make sure you replace the leads with some good after market ones as well ...
|
Some good news. We needed that once in a while. I hate hearing bad news, so that's great.

$3800 . Car is otherwise great shape with maintenence records or I wouldn't have paid that much. Oh, and one lousy burned out HID .. lol
I thought I got a good deal when I purchased my 8 back for $9,200 before taxes & dealership fees when 8's were around $14k because of a "bad engine." But, this was also around the time when Mazda first announced they were extending the warranty on 04-08 models and since the dealership was not a Mazda dealership they were unaware of the bulletin they lowered the price. All I had to do was a basic tune-up (coils, plugs, wires) and it ran perfect... until the clutch started slipping and the brand new tires that I was promised were never received. |
^ Likewise, I received the car close to the same price but with 105,008 all highway miles!

Well congratulations.

hmm, coils effect compression numbers ?
and 133 rpm starter ? hmm ... ok. Well u got the car for 3K something that's a steal for sure. |
yeah the car was just flooded because of no ignition from the bad coils. the low compression is caused by the fuel washing away the oil so the apex seals arent sealing well. the rpms on start were probably caused by a low battery from start attempts
|
wow congrats on the new car and who say the rx8club aint helpfull, haha, well done

Just curious why the 2x BUR9EQ and 2x BUR7EQ plugs and not rx8 stock plugs? I know you did not specifically say its an rx8, but I can only assume it is.

2x BUR9EQ and 2x BUR7EQ cost the same as a single stock plug lol. It was seriously like $26 after tax for all 4.

it's 16 bux each for stock plugs. and they last twice as long if not 3 times as long as the older platinum plugs. and it's at the right "length"
|
I'm assuming you shimmed the plugs?

Trailing plugs were shimmed, yes.
Not that it matters now, got free OEM plugs thanks to Recall 4206f. Going back in to have them installed tomorrow at no charge. Huzzah. |
Nice!
