Best oil filter

I've used fram oil filters my whole life, but I've heard bad things about them recently
so i would like to ask what you think the best oil filter is?

nycgps 03-04-2011 09:59 PM

recently? really?

they have been garbage for years if not decades !

Anyway, believe it or not Stock Oil filter (made by either Denso or Chamipon or some other major OEM) is actually very good. filter down to .18 micron. ok size.

or you can just buy some decent ones like WiX, K&N, Mobil1(made by Champion Labs I think) or Royal Purple

The one that's free!

Seriously, I catch Mobil 1 0w40 on sale for 5 for 24.99, or they usually sell you 5 quarts with Mobil 1 filter for 29.99.

There's a new oil filter test on BITOG, and Mobil1 oil filters tested really good which I'm getting a lot of anyway for free. Pure one was the good one last time, but now doesn't look too good, and Fram on the new test looks plain scarey.

If you ask me, any oil filters will do. They just filtered out dirty oil from your engine. No horsepower gain with an expensive oil filter. Just my own reason.

I've been using STP. It's right next to the oil at Autozone, so it works out pretty well. Seems like they aren't the super bestest, but for their price are very decent.

Yea I used to do that. and got myself a lot of mobil1 filters.

cheap filters deteriorate over time and their filtration is bad, they also create restrictions so less oil pressure. OEM, WIX or K&N give good filtration and are good quality

I'm surprised they still let you troll this forum. Unfortunately your advice is beyond stupid more often than not.

Couldn't have said it better....

Anyways, I have been using a larger than stock size oil filter. I forgot the model. I only use Mobil 1 or OEM.

Read up on this please:

So since they filter out the dirty oil from my engine why would I ever need to change my oil?

monchie 03-05-2011 05:23 PM

I meant was dirt debris from oil.

laythor 03-05-2011 05:48 PM

opinions are like assholes....

There are proven factual results through tests and this topic does not require and ask for opinions. Please don't freaking post if you insist on giving misinformation and trolling. You do not need to up your "post count" as you previously said in your deleted post (by mods I am assuming), so stop that shit. I will continue to report your posts if they are the same useless thread crap you usually post.

Ignore.

I actually get OEM 09+ filters from paul at Mazmart for a great price. PM and I am sure he can hook you up.

Fram makes several better quality filters now, the problem is people still espouse the same BS forever as if technology or manufacturing processes never improve ... kind of like the GL4 vs GL5 trans oil vs soft metal argument. What if OEM, Mobil1, and K&N decide to cheap out their filter and don't tell anyone. Would you notice? You know you wouldn't and how many years will it be before anybody decides to check them again due to "common wisdom"?

Yeah, everybody is an expert ...

Yeah I have used Fram filters for years without issue on previous cars. I know they test bad supposedly but the sure grip sure is a nice touch. But for the price, the Mazda filters are good enough for me.

Agreed. I believe there have been a few new tests done on revised Fram filters that proves they are now making quality filters. The link I posted is quite dated.

I use WIX and I have my oil filters tested. They are functioning perfectly and not breaking down. I have always used WIX filters for everything though so I am kind of partial to them. To each his own I just like the price for quality you get with WIX.

WingleBeast 03-06-2011 02:10 AM

in all reality there are only 4 or so manufacturers of filters, the rest is just branding. most are either Purolators or Champions, just in different badgeing. I do know that KN and mobile 1 use synthetic filter elements which is why i use them instead of the fram clone paper type.

I decided to do more digging and what I was able to find was this:

Wix and Mobile 1 and Amsoil provide some of the best filtering on the market. The Amsoil was rated very highly by a lot of performance and racing companies. The Wix was seen as the best flow rate along with filtering capability. The Mobil 1 and the Wix filters are matched pretty evenly for the amount of particulates caught, but the Wix has a higher flow rate and can capture much smaller particles. They both held about the same amount of weight before becomming clogged down with debris. The Wix filter was actually rated very highly for its ability to hold dirt over the others and not slow down filtering rate or increase in psi. (Amsoil are custom built by Wix, Mobile 1 are custom built by Champion Labs).

Wix filters filter at 10-12 microns. They have a glass and paper media, the glass media is considered the number one best filter on the market.

Amsoil is the racing version of the Wix oil filter. It filters less, but doesn't have the same 2 psi drop that the Wix standard filter has. You can find this information on the amsoil website, via Joe Gibbs Racing and Richard Petty Racing. (98.7 percent at 15 microns for the filter that fits our car) It doesn't filter as small a particle as the stock wix filter, but it does filter faster, and has a one year/15,000 mile life.

Mobile 1 filters while they filter slower they use a synthetic filter. They filter about the same number of particles as the Wix filter did, just at a slightly slower rate. It was very highly rated though. They claim its better for higher pressure (TC or SC systems) and can withstand 5 times the pressure other filters can. From what I have seen in real lab results they are 99.9% at 19 microns then drastically fall off from that point.

So that makes the Wix filter I posted above the highest filtration rate.

Wix (Glass media regarded as a high flow filter with excellent particulate retention, 5 to 9 microns smaller than mobile 1s capability) : http://www.amsoil.com/catalog.aspx?code=51365-EA

Amsoil (designed for use with synthetic oils): http://www.amsoil.com/catalog.aspx?code=Ea15k12-EA
