backfiring - advice

I have all the SR bolt ons including the intake. I had a K&N which I had idling problems with until I had the M flash and the idle improved as well as the throttle response. Because the K&N was on the loud side, I got the SR which was expensive but looked good. Since I have installed, I have nothing but problems with the car backfiring once I hit 5k or am going about 80 mph. I can not figure it out. I have spoken to Gregg at SR and he told me my problems are not being caused by the intake and he thought the ECU was the problem. I have not been throwing any CEl's but he thinks there is a code problem. I have made an appointment with my local Mazda dealer who has done most of the installs. I am getting freakin frustrated. Any suggestions ?

you mean backfiring out your exhaust?? that's not so much a symptom of the intake as it is just the rich tune of the engine. when the first few thousand were shipped over here with the "J" or "K" or whatever flash they were on before, a stock (straight from the factory) car would shoot 3 foot flames once it got hot enough.

heck, i even made an "M" flash car burble and pop just blipping the throttle with no load when it was warm (definitely not hot, but'd been driven a little).

are you sure backfiring is what you mean to describe?

Try using regular. It has less Octane so will burn better.

Go down to the 99cent store and buy some fuel cleaner. It will lean out your mixture.

Contact Dave on this forum, he has a SR midpipe with back fire but not as bad as you speak of. See what he did.

Yeah.. I dont think you mean backfire... but pop... Mine does it all the time.. It's really loud when there is lots of load on the car. I have grown accustom to the pop that it gives me. The pop is the loudest when I shift above 8,000 rpm.

Mine crackles and pops almost everytime I change gears..... sounds f***ing awesome IMO.

It is not the pop that I mind, it is the bogging down sensation that occurs at the same time. When the popping starts around 5k or under load, I loose the momentum built up to that point. It always happens once I hit 80 mph
