Any1 have engine problems in the cold??

I had an rx-8, but sold it to pay for school, and now im buying a new one, and was just wondering if anyone has any problems with the rotary engine stalling or having trouble starting in the cold, because some dealer was telling me that they do...he seemed really against the rx-8 but i dont know why b/c its an awesome car...please let me know of any other problems you guys have experienced (suspension, engine, etc.)...also, is the rotary engine expensive to repair? and how easy is it to break?
Thanks alot guys...

Listen to your dealer, they always know best.

well i live in MN and these last couple of days ways very cold in the single digits i am fairly new on this website, i have own my 8 for a year now and everything is fine if you choose to buy one get an 05 and up model, during cold temp always let your engine warm up never shut it off cold and before shutting it up reve it to about 3500 rpm for about 10 to 15sec and shut it off never had a single problem during cold time and my 8 sit outside

I picked up my 8 in the fall (an 04 GT) and have had no problems with the cold. I'm in Winnipeg (central Canada), so it's been pretty cold. No problems starting or handling the winter (get winter tires). The oil dip stick gets the foam on it pretty bad (even after warmed up) but it's a common issue and goes away when the ambient temps get warmer.

The gas mileage is pretty bad at the best of times, but seems to get worse in the winter. I've dropped from around 17 in the fall to nearly 14 in the winter (all city). It's only been a few months thou, so we'll see if that changes in the long run (probably not).

He is being facetious.

Once again, I'll bet I can get your car to flood!

I haven't flooded mine either.... 3 years and no free sparkplugs to show for it... damn. I tried to kill it cold, don't rev it at shut down... still doesnt flood.

I'm the same way as all the rest of you non-flooders. '04 GT here, owned by me since October of 2006. All the recalls have been addressed. Purchased with 27K miles, just hit 46K this week, and I live in Colorado, so the winters can get pretty darn cold, and I have never flooded, never really had any issues related to cold at all.

I didn't flood in over 4 year. Then I flooded after Christmas. That was my Christmas present.

DOMINION 01-18-2008 08:09 AM

A good way to keep from flooding your car and stalling in the cold is not to drive your call when its cold. Let her warm up to op temps.

chetrickerman 01-18-2008 08:25 AM

i will tell you tomorrow. it is supposed to be -25 windchill

DOMINION 01-18-2008 08:46 AM

You will have hard starts in the cold and thats not good. But aside from that the Rotary runs hot and loves the cold.

chetrickerman 01-18-2008 09:14 AM

There is no such thing as heat, the faster the molecules move the hotter it is
the faster movement makes the molecules bump into each other faster which creates more friction which makes heat.

Listen DiDom/Troll the RX8 runs best when only serviced by the dealer .... don't let these other guys fool you.
They are all just a bunch of know it alls anyway. Why would you want to listen to perfectly good advice when you have a dealership to support you?

Now if you'll be so kind, I'm off to re-align my anal crystals with the warp ass field.

wcs 01-18-2008 09:37 AM

Oh and +1 post

STLRX8 01-18-2008 03:55 PM

Some say they have issues and some say they don't. I have noticed slower start in the cold. If our engines are (suposedly) cold blooded and you aren't suppose to rev at all under temp, I wonder is it possible to install block heaters? Is it possible and if so would it help?
