Any Short shifter compatible with the 8?

Has anyone successfully installed a short shift on the 8? Please inform us I am really interested. I tried doing a search but only came up with this website.

Past forum members say it is not advisable. :(

robertdot 06-28-2004 10:32 AM

Is the stock one not short enough? All my friends make fun of me because the shift is so dainty and short... I think they are jealous.

CruelNewb 06-28-2004 10:39 AM

its still too long, not to compare the 8 with the s2000 but I like the short shift in the S2 better. thats all, I think its 1.5 inch in the S2.

nosubstitutec4s 06-28-2004 03:47 PM

i think that the 8 has one of the shortest shifts ive ever used. on the porsche carreras, the throw is HUGE!!! but then again, coming from a c4s to an 8, i would think that the 8 is very short.

loco4rx8 06-28-2004 06:25 PM

You can shorten the throw by choosing a different shift knob. It really makes a big difference in the shifting feel. Maybe try that first before getting all drastic. ;)

I came from a Z06 with a b&m ripper shifter, and the 8 is way long compared to that. I am also very interested in a REAL short throw shifter, the stock just doesn't do it for me!!!!!

leegina 06-28-2004 08:10 PM

I suggest a shift knob like the VOODOO sphere one that would make a difference like loco4rx8 said. I do not think they have an actuall shifter out for the 8.

magixpuma 06-29-2004 12:29 AM

take a hack saw to that babie and that will shortern it.
Well.... sorta

Overport 06-29-2004 12:55 PM

Why? You cant get any damn shorter than the stock shifter....if you cant shift fast with the stock shifter, you wont be able to shift fast with an aftermarket one. Really, nothing comes much shorter than the stock one.

CruelNewb 06-29-2004 02:08 PM

now Im not to familiar with the term, is short shofter defined as the height of the shifter or the distance between each shift? If its the distance its a little too long.

nosubstitutec4s 06-29-2004 02:34 PM

its the distance.

robertdot 06-29-2004 02:37 PM

shift distance (my definition) : distance the hand needs to move to get the car from one gear to the next sequential gear.

short shifters have a short shift distance. i still think you are all mad if you think the '8 is too long. I guess you could pull the shift boot out, and cut the shifter down to the tranny and stick your hand in the hole. That would be much shorter and complement your mental state. ;) ;) ;)

titaniumgrey 07-03-2004 03:01 PM

DEFINITELY not short enough ... goto a acura dealer and shift with a STOCK RSX type S , much shorter and better feel than our 30 grand car shifters. It's ok , but feels long compared to a stock 6 speed type s ....

This was discussed a while back, here. But it's Renesis Racing that's being discussed there. Far as I know, they're the only game in town.

RPIRX-8 07-04-2004 02:38 AM

I don't think the problem is the shift distance, the issue for me is notchiness I think. I got a VooDoo knob and that helped, but now I'm mis-shifting like crazy going from 2-3 during spirited driving. Also while doing spirited driving I get a bit of gear grind if I do a quick 3-4 shift. If I just shift it a little slower, goes in like butter. Gearbox is definitely notchy tho. My friend has a 330Ci with a short shifter and you can literally tap that thing into gear with not much effort.

shelleys_man_06 07-04-2004 09:49 AM

Is there any way to get the shift shorter? I'm happy with my short throws. I can tell you this much: the 2003 Cobra is like rowing boat. Imagine that on an RX-8 and then you can start complaining.

The stock one isn't short enough for you? Unfortunately the 8 is never going to be a drag car so why waste the money in a short shift when you are only going to save yourself very little shift time. And the cars that you are comparing the 8 to would just be looking in the rear view admiring a gorgeous car:) Appreciate what you have, we are a minority of people with this car so revel in it, mod the exterior, make it unique and your own.

liqiud 07-04-2004 03:15 PM

I am actually looking for one as well...

I realize that our car is not a drag racer, but in trying to make the car uniquely mine, this is something that i want to do. As fellow club members i don't think you should assume that he wants it so he can race better, maybe it is just personal preference...

just my opinion anyway. I would love to find one...

CruelNewb 07-04-2004 05:44 PM

actually that is so true, my arms arent really that long and I actually have to move my body forward to shift to 1-3-5 but on the S200 i felt more comfortable shifting 1inch. But I like the 8 and I think it can be done =)

Bet on Black 07-04-2004 09:46 PM

True, I shouldn't assume. Each to his own. If that is what you want, go for it! More unique the better!

WHealy 07-04-2004 10:53 PM

Remember - you can doa short shifter by lowering the knob OR lengenthing the rod below the pivot point. I beleive the second is what the one mentioned at the begining of the thread does.
