Any difference between '04 and '10 Fuel Filters?
 

My '04 manual recommends replacing the fuel filter at 100,000 miles as part of the routine scheduled maintenance.

But I noticed the '10 manual doesn't mention replacing the fuel filter at all in it's schedule.

Did Mazda simply change their mind about it's necessity?

Or is the '04 filter inferior somehow to the '10s, and still needs replacing while the newer filters don't?

The fuel filter is attached to the internal fuel pump. I have never seen a separate p/n for it.

Its not a filter as you would imagine, as in a separate canister, its a sock on the pump in the tank, on '04's.

Typically, you don't replace the fuel filter on these cars because of the way the fuel pump assembly is designed.. If you have 100,000 miles and your fuel pump hasn't failed yet I would replace it. I have 87k miles on my 8 and I'm on my third fuel pump.

Mine has 30k miles and never have my fuel pump replaced. I use plus unleaded gas in my car and don't have a problem so far. What are the symptoms on having a bad fuel pump? Just curious.

As most know the two Series RX-8's use a different Fuel Pump, the principals are identical, the Series 2 is just a later unit.

Both Pumps have a sock type filter which is removable, unfortunately the Series 1's Mazda EPC does not list ANY individual Parts for sale for the Fuel Pump.

If you are after an OEM Series 1 Fuel Pump filter (sock) you have to buy the complete assembly.
N3H1-13-35ZG at $289.00

Series 2's have individual Parts available for it's Fuel Pump.
The removable Fuel Filter or Sock is LFB6-13-ZE1 @ $17.03.
Also fits Mazda 2,3,6 CX-7 and 9, MX-5

And unfortunately they are not the same filter sock as the Series 1 RX-8..

I recall someone claiming that the S1 sock is identical to the FD3, but have never verified it and in general it's pointless anyways to change it IMO, the only exception would be to somehow get a load of major crap in your gas tank which generally speaking is extremely rare, even then you can typically clean and reuse it

Yes it could be the one Team..

All FD's used this DENSO Fuel Filter sock..as does the MPV and 1989 323.

The sock Filter is OEM JE17-13-ZE1 Filter ( but at $28.81)..

Would be worth a try IF someone really wanted one..

Well this is what I was reading in my manual... what do you think they meant to have done then? Or was it a "typo" since they don't mention it for later models?

because the owner's manual was designed/layout by some "copy and paste" idiot. like Team said, the Fuel pump will go south b4 the filter clogs ...

S2 Rx-8 has Denso (Thank you) pump and it probably gonna last forever (at least more than 100K)

Fuel pump in S1 RX-8 suck ass anyway. I'm on my 2nd Fuel pump and it has 25-35K miles now. and it starting to get Lean condition and some slight choke when I go thru corners, especially when fuel level is low. I guess it's time to replace it again. >_< Lucky I have the official fuel pump removal tool. Speaking of that, I have some extra one laying around, anybody wanna buy it? let me know :)

Well..I suggest you contact you Dealer or MNAO as ask exactly where to purchase this "Fuel Filter"....make sure they have one, and then come back to us.

Or, go and spend $28 and discover if Teams and our theory that an FD one will fit.

or just pull, clean, and reuse the existing one

FD sock is the long white (new) one, the S1 RX-8 is the Yellow looking one above it in pic.

Swoope did use the FD sock in S1 Pump after I guess some modifications, he does not exactly say, well not without reading pages in his thread....someone else can do that.

well it's all moot anyway for the previously stated reason, not that we don't beat dead horses into mush around here ...

I just replaced mine...2005...66000 km's...at least I know mine is not alone...ridiculous...now I drive right by the Mazda dealership every 2 years when I get a new car.

You find it ridiculous that something failed on a 13 year old car?
Also you may want to stop by the dealer one of these days for some of those free recalls on your 13 year old car ;)
