Another question about jack stands
 
I have read through all of the threads I could find, but didn't really see an answer to my question. With my side skirts on now, I am not sure I can use the rails that the shop manual suggest as points to place jack stands to support the car. So, what other places have people out there used with success to place jack stands? Pics would be most helpful, if they're available. Thanks.

If you can get them under the frames near the root joints of the lower A-arms, that should be a pretty solid couple of points on the front end (not sure if you'd obstruct yourself with them there, it's been a while since I've been underneath for anything other than the oil drain.

Not too sure about the back end, though. I know you can jack the car by the differential housing, but I wouldn't feel too safe using just 3 jackstands since you're likely to be pulling and/or torquing on various things that could cause rolling in the chassis. Maybe the frames somewhere near where one of the rear linkages attaches.

I'm not sure how accessible any of those points are for that sort of operation, and would definitely reccomend you get a second opinion before taking my word for anything.

Oh no!! Guess that's a challenge, eh?

OK. Tell me something first. If you can't use the jacking points on the sides of the car, how would you jack the car up in case of a flat tire? Or how would a shop put the car up on a lift, since most of the modern lifts use those side jacking points?

I'm full of questions tonight, and I'm afraid I don't have a good authoritative answer for you, unfortunately. But let me offer a suggestion anyway. Assuming that the skirts you have are actually blocking the side jacking points, you might want to consider cutting :eek: away the part of the skirts that obscure the jacking points. You can probably do that so that the cut out area is not visible from a normal viewing position. That way, you avoid the flat tire-jacking situation and the potential lift problem. I recall one member stating that he was refused service because the shop couldn't put his machine up on their hoist for this very reason.

BTW, I really like the loooonnnnggg skirts much better than the comaprable OEM appearance package items. I suspect that's what you have.

no problem...the side skirts do not interefere with the standard jack stand points

you may have the location of the jack stand points confused which is why this has become so complicated

That's where I put the jack stands after raising the car using a floor jack at the front and rear jacking points.
